I remember when the 42% came out in the USRA (Ed Rankin) it is gorgeous plane.

Well, they aren't called S500 airplanes. I would almost like to see a grudge race between a Jett powered Q500 and one of our gold warbirds. I'm betting it would be pretty close.

The black fire one was recorded at 185 out of the corner
The yellow one should be a tad quicker as the engine mods are more intense - im reading 21,200 on the ground with a 8.8x9

The Macchi airframe I kicked this thread off with has very close to the same drag profile as a Q500. It takes the power of a YS 115 to get close to 180 mph. IMO no amount of mods to any .40 2 stroke is going to get a Q500 coming out of a turn at 185. A Q500 looses roughly 20% airspeed in a turn as well.

Hello, I guess I can ask this here, if one was to build a plane to meet the rules for using a YS 115 for power what area is the wing to be? Are there any wing thickness, span or chord rules? Does the tail count in area rules as in FAI comp? Weight minimum rules?

that will work for now, Thanks
DE

I hope you build a plane and come race as this racing is taking off here on the west coast. come join in the fun!

515 square inch for up to a 1.19 Cu four stroke. has to be wing area tail doesn't help. No minimum weight but most built up race planes are 6 pounds or more for the 1.15. I wouldnt worry about weight as a 8 pound plane can run the number with a YS 1.15 engine. No thickness rule either. just build a plane that is strong enough for 180 mph.

Thanks for the info, good help... Not real worried about to heavy just to light, my F5D airframes with a 12mm thick wing at root (about 230 sq in) bare airframe weighs about 10 ounces and 2.2 lbs when finished ready to fly, good for 220mph and over 40 gs my Q40 can be built so you need to add about 6 ounces if you shoot for light. (3.5 lbs for a 400 sq in wing plane ready to fly) I could see one of these at that size being 5 to 5.5 lbs which would really help in turns, it takes a lot of lift/drag to turn a heavy plane 180 degrees.... hmmm, just thinking

rules are pretty wide open with good limit on time to keep dumb arses like me in check, may not be this year but we will see, I think I could build something that richard could really break out with.... under 1 minute??? has that been done yet.. its about 600 feet between poles isnt it?

thanks
DE

700 feet between poles. Richard did a best of 1:12 getting under a minute would be tough right now with a FS but i think it can be done in next couple of years. working with marty and richard we would like to see this go nation wide so get to building lol.

I think on that course a Q40 in race trim would do around 1:07 if can get it to roll fast enough. three pole rates are not enough for two pole on the ailerons

I would like to see my warbirds on a 3 pole course and my Q40 on a 2 pole course

I bet the Q40 on a 2 pole would do 1:01-1:03
I bet the warbird on a 3 pole would do 1:12- 1:15

No deal LOL I'm in the painting phase right now and after blocking 3 airplanes twice now and deciding to go for a third round I place a high value on those Macchis. It's taking 2 hours per airplane so at this point I'm approx 12 hours in just blocking primer this week. I have hopes of spraying color on Sat.

I just swept up all the primer dust I made sanding the 3 Macchi. I mixed it up with epoxy and had enough to sculpt a 4 th Macchi. LOL glad I only do this once a year.

Shawn you just crack me up. I just wiped off the dust from my KI and mixed it with epoxy and sculpted a stick plane for IMAC.

We got a race in 2 weeks!!!!! Where is all the smack talk? Not all that "My Macchi is the fastest thing at SAM" BS, I'm talking trash talk. Not you Marty as you are not even going to show up at this race, I guess I Love Lucy reruns are more important or something.

"I Love Lucy"?! Just how old are you, Dave? Here I thought we were right about the same age.

Me . . . "The Walking Dead" is done for now, so I'm getting caught up on "Vikings." It a good substitute until "Game of Thrones" starts up again.

Sorry to be so quiet up to now. I'm just patiently waiting . . . looking around to see who else is coming, and therefore to see who's gonna finish SECOND
(or slower) . . . ya know: JR, Kimo, . . . ).

Well Dave, I'll let you get back to your "Mary Tyler-Moore" and "The Flying Nun" re-runs, now, too.

(There now, does that get the ball rolling for ya?)

As always Shawn, Your work is a stand out! That plane will do well in Silver and also the Two Minute Tango. (How's that for a fairy tale?)

Ollie: You need to read the post carefully Mr. School teacher. I was referring to Marty not ME. I'm a Breaking Bad kinda guy.

Is anyone camping out at the field for the race?

Dave
