What the hell is with all these ads??? It is starting to do thing here as well. If this is the status quo for RC Universe, I say we transition to RC Groups because this just sucks!

I am amazed Roy was able to make it to Tommy's. I did not know his ankle bracelet from the county gave him that much range beyond his front door. At least this time he was only sneaking pics of airplanes...

It would seem that Roy found a way to disable his ankle bracelet.
At least the cops didn't come to my door. However, I may need to speak with him about the prop he put on my P-40.
On the 6th flight today on her first time out of the house, the P-40 met it's demise.
I was making a high speed pass from south to north and had just passed midfield at about 20' when there was a strange noise from the plane, then it started shaking violently and in less than milliseconds the engine and firewall structure left the airframe and the right wing simultaneously lost the panel from the aileron out.
Once all this extra structure was released from the plane the rest of it carried northbound for about another 50 yards.
The line of debris started with the engine/firewall, then further north the right wing panel, then still further north the rest of the plane.
I am sure that if I had any way to find it, that somewhere around midfield is the outer portion of an APC 14x13N blade that separated from the prob about 1/2" outboard of the spinner. This caused a vibration that caused the rest of the mayhem.
Anyways, here's a few pics.

So sorry to hear that T-Gun. Was looking forward to seeing this bird too. Its amazing how a 14 dollar piece of plastic can FUBAR the entire plane. Sounds like APC needs to ramp up QC over at their plant. All I know is the P-40 has been your White Whale lately as it applies to airframes. Best stay with the Axis powers, that ole 190 won't let ya down. As Churchill would say, keep a stiff upper lip and keep "buggering" on my friend. See ya at the end of the week.

Hey Jake, thanks for the unusually kind words.
You've noticed the same thing Iwas thinking about with me and P-40's, almost as if someone is trying to tell me something.
As for the prop, I don't think I can really blame APC.
The plane had been on it's back in the thick grass at least twice as I tried to get a handle on the landing speed.
Any of those events could have stressed a blade when it hung up in the grass.
Oh well........
Next....a Hyperion Hayate

Not arguing or creating an issue here but hopefully able to shed a little light on what happened to me a few years back.
I had a 13.5X 13.5 N come a part on a run up in Phoenix. I Talked with Robert at APC on the phone, and he have me some great info. When these YS110's are pumped up with nitro, and when the YS115's came out they exceeded the specs of the then produced APC narrow props. They were pattern props never intended for our pylon high nitro apps or the new YS115. APC has since beefed up the ones and produced them to meet our applications. I personally don't run the "Narrow" props anymore as the hubs are very small for what stress we put them through. All my race props are the std hubs. I notice you were using a 14X13N. It may be what was explained to me or it could be as you said, or even as Jake said. I tend to believe the narrow props don't have the mass area to properly handle the thumping the YS motors put on them in higher nitro scenarios. I may even be wrong here but am pretty sure this might be the case. APC makes incredible props and I have not had one come a part since I switched to the bigger hub. In fact I have only heard of 3 cases where an older narrow prop did this.

Just a quick reminder, if you have a shade structure and table, you might want to bring it because I know we will run out of tables. I am making the pits a little bigger which will go out into the parking lot 10 feet for all the shade structures. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks
JR

Marty,
T-Gun was running 20/20. Motor was still in break in process. The plane did look very sweet before it made that awful noise.

Yup,
As Skids stated, I was on my 6th tank of 20/20 and running rich.
I was not asking any real power out of the engine as of yet.
I spoke to another flyer that watched it happen and he said he was sure he saw the engine break out and hit the wing panel, thus causing that panel to fold up. That makes me feel a little better about the structure of the wing for the next P-40B that I prep for gold. The strike seems to have happened just in front of the gear mount blocks where the wing has the cutouts for the rotating retracts.
Now that I've had time to look at whats left during the strip down, I've determined that the fuselage and tail are fine to repair and reuse.
I just need to find another wing or have the Coach cut me another wing like he did for my 190. And I'm going to have to repair the cowl to use as a plug to make a mold.
I'm trying to find another of these P-40's to purchase. It was shaping up to be a fast plane.
Here's a couple shots of how the prop ended up.
I'm almost convinced that I lost both blades in rapid succession.

It sure would take a lot of violence to shear both those blades off. Makes me want to do a once over on my props before the race. Getting close to "go" time. I will be cooking my salsa tomorrow and should be at the field Friday to practice a bit to get everything dialed in. Looking forwrd to getting some real stick time on the 209 now that the motor is working.

As a side note: hearing that you are reusing the fuse and tail on the P-40 parallels my current build. I am doing another Zero using the tail of my original Zero. The firewall was too weak on the first one and ripped the motor out. Beefed this one up, so this should be a great replacement for the Tony, just in case, or a decent backup. Lets just hope for the latter. I have a standard 115 for it so it should do just fine.

Thanks T-Gun. I really loved how this plane handled so, it just seemed like a no-brainer to get another one up and running.

BTW: Salsa is done!

Planes are all test driven and ready for tomorrow. Got the 2nd flight on the 209 today. Thanks T-Gun for the assistance.
