What is the formula for figuring the wing area for the 120 warbird class?

I understand what the wing area limits are.
I am asking how the area is calculated for planes in this class.
Are they simply taken from the manufacturers specs?
Or is there a provision as shown here from the SAM's rules?

"The maximum engine size for a particular aircraft will be determined using the wing area/engine displacement tables provided below. Engine sizes will be allowed a 1% (.01 multiplier) fudge factor. Wankel engines are classified as 2 stroke engines. Proof of engine displacement is the responsibility of the contestant. Wing area will be determined by average chord X span when requested by specific protest."

Sorry, Misunderstood your question.

Here is a sample of the rules as written:

Any scale replica of a piston engine, man carrying, propeller driven fighter aircraft that served in WWII, the Korean conflict, Vietnam or any Reno Racer that raced in an official Unlimited race heat at Reno with a minimum of 550 sq in. will be deemed legal. Military Trainers such as AT-6, T-34 and PT-26 are legal. The World Models T-34 Mentor is legal. No twin-engine aircraft, Biplane or Formula I aircraft are allowed. No homebuilt type airplanes such as Lancair or Glasair

The Warbird/ Reno Racer must be a least standoff scale in appearance. They can be built from ARF kits, plans, or may be scratch built from plans or personal design. If they are to be scratch built or modified to resemble a Reno racer or Warbird, you must have all major scoops and vents that extend from the fuselage attached. Gun stacks or Exhaust headers not necessary. This is not a scale contest. Airplanes will not be judged for scale appearance but will not be allowed to race without all necessary scoops or blisters that distinguish the airframes design. You may change the size of the moveable surfaces but the outline of the aircraft must resemble the outline of the full-size.

BASIC RULES:

Aircraft must weigh a minimum of 6.5-lbs. dry weight and no more than 15lbs. Plans or outlines with dimensions of the wing is required as proof of square inches. The wing must have a minimum of 550 sq inches. Wing and fuselage must be proportional in size. Airfoil thickness shall be no less than 11% from the root and tip cords. Wing must have constant taper. (See formula below). If you have a kit that isn’t stock, proof of these dimensions is required. Elliptical wings will be measured four inches from the outer most tip of the wing for the tip chord thickness.

The following engines are the only engines allowed:

Any front intake, side exhaust 2-stroke engine with a minimum of .90cu.in and a maximum 1.20 cu.in sized engine or manufacturer may be used. Carburetors are required and must allow motor to idle with ease. Engines must idle a minimum of 4000 RPM for a 10 second period. Aircraft not meeting this will not be allowed to race. You may use any exhaust system of your choice be a special muffler or tuned pipe. Exhaust must be a minimum of 2 inches to be legal. Ducted fan engines or Helicopter engines not allowed. Modifications are legal.

Any four-stroke .90 to 1.20 engines allowed. You may use any exhaust system of your choice be a special muffler or tuned pipe. Straight header pipes allowed. Exhaust header pipes must be at least 1-1/2†in length

To answer your question, it is the "real" physical size of the wing. Some of the manufacturer's specifications are not correct so you must verify this. I bought a FW-190 from China that said 550 sq in but when I got it, it was 297....so that was incorrect. To measure the wing area of the wing, it is the average chord X wingspan. The 11% is based on the thickness of the wing. If you have a kit that says 500 sq inches and want to add material to make it to 550, it is legal as long as it is proportional in size to the fuse. There were no slope soaring P-51's if you get my drift. Wings will only be checked when under protest. Be careful here as Contest and Series Coordinators have the right to challenge an aircraft to the rules at anytime no matter what. If they feel they do not meet the rules as intended, they can check to make sure everything is in check. If another pilot chooses to challenge, then there is a procedure for that.

If you want to do something out of the ordinary and wonder if it is legal, shoot me a private email and I will take it up with the "CD's". This is the best solution if in question.

The T-34 and Sport Warbird races are fun. We keep the politics out and have fun. We have been doing this a long time and you can ask anyone how well the races go.

Thanks for the reply.
In the instance I am speaking of the planes manufacturer claims 527 sq in.
If you measure it as we see allowed in the rules, it exceeds 550 sq in.
So in this case the manufacturer is understating the wing area.
If you like, I can shoot some pics of the wing in question with a tape measure on it.
Thanks

Tommy Gun,

What aircraft is it?

Send me some pics. [email protected]

You cant always go as noted on teh box. I have seen airplanes as well state they are a 520 on the box and 500 on plans for the same plane. I have a bearcat that say 520 on the box, 510 on the plans and it measures to 540 if you calculate the plans. It all depends on the final product.

Here are some pics of the wing I am speaking of.
The manufacturer claims 527 sq/in.
The calculations come up with 552 sq/in if you measure it right to the gnats *****.
The parallax from the camera angle makes it look as if I am cheating a bit off the wing tip when in fact I am right on it.
The dimensions I come up with are span 55.9" and average chord 9.875".

What is the width of the wing at the center ( Root ) of the wing where both halves meet? What is the width of the wing tip...measure in about a inch from the tip.

12.5" at the root
6.5" at the tip
I think I see where this is going.
I am guessing you add the two dimensions together and then divide by 2 and then multiply by the span.

Now the wing area drops substantially to 531 sq/in

That inch of reduction at the tip ate into the wing area pretty bad considering that the tips are only rounded on the leading and trailing edges.

Based on this method I would be forced to use this plane in the Unlimited Warbird class with a YS 1.20 to race in the Triangle series events.

Yes, you use the tips and root width and divide by 2. This gives you the accurate width average. The reason I had you take a inch off was it looked like the tips rounded out about an inch...so if it doesnt, you can add those in as well...If you have another 6.5 on each side, then you have 13 more squares. I dont have the wing in front of me so I am only going off the picture. I was just going about the main part of the wing.

So if you have 531 plus 13, that gives you 544....what you may do in this case is add a 1/2 inch to the center of the wing or maybe add some to the tips to bring it to 550. Another idea is to trace the wing out of paper, then draw 1" squares. You can apply this to the tips only and this will help measure. My solution would be to knock the tips off and add maybe a 1/2" to each.

If it is over 520, yes it is legal for unlimited with the 1.20. Just on average....it should be doing about 165+mph to be competitive in the class.
