Default RCPRO Warbird Races. Come fly with us.

Hi Guys,

This is a reminder that the RPCRO warbirds will be racing in Phoenix this Saturday at Speed World and then next month at the new Victor Valley RC Park in Hesperia, CA. We would love to have some new competititors. IT is bracket racing so you can choose to build something very fast or just throw together an ARF and a good stock engine and come and race. Feel free to ask questions if you are interested.

Blessings, Terry

Here is what Bob and I have been working on this past week. Set to have its first race at Speed world Phoenix this Saturday, assuming flight tests go good tomorrow.

Um...................that particular one's not gonna be .....

I had similar luck today during test hop for new racer: they go a lot faster after the wing peels off!

Yes very fast for a short time and the roll rate is 800+ deg per second.
very bumed, it was a great flyer and a Gold break out was in order. We will need to do it again but with more carbon in the layup.

Too bad about the Tony Lee. One of the draw backs to over powering an ARF it seems.

Well, Phoenix is in the books. It was an awesome time as usual. The course workers are top notch and the field is one of the best I have flown at.
The racing was fast and furious with the usual display of sportsmanship I have come to expect at RCPRO races. YOu are not going to want to miss the next one in Hesperia, CA if you can make it.

Here are some pics. I only had time of take a few before the heats started.

Nice Pics Terry:

Please tell me the Cub did not race. Did your son fly his Veltro, and if so, how did it do? We still have about 4 weeks until things start here in the North state. Im wondering how the 190 did as well. I have looked at that ARF a few times and was just curious of its characterstics. Thanks for the racing update Terry.

BTW: How is the Hurricane coming along.

Hi Jake,

Sorry to disappoint you, but both cubs raced. I had trouble with my engine and only got through one heat with it and it was surging the whole time. The other cub, flown by it's designer, Mike Del Ponte, took first in Gold. A cub is perfectly legal in RCPRO warbird racing. The only plane that raced that was not legal was the the Gee Bee you see in one of the pics. We let him fly it as a demonstration cause it was so cool.

I have the Hurricane finished but not in time for this race. I will be flying it at the next one here in Hesperia. My son flew the FW 190 in silver and was not happy with it. It is not quite fast enough for silver with the YS 60 in it. Just too much plane.

Barry, Yes I got the Strega. Looks like I will need it since I lost mine to a mid air at the race. Lost my cub too so I have some building to do to get ready for the next race.

Blessings, Terry

Just 3 weeks left until our race in Hesperia. I have already been notified that some of the fastest AZ guys are planning to come so it should be a very good event with some very exciting racing. It would be awesome if we could get some more So Cal guys to come and race with us. It is a one day event so just about everyone can make it. Please feel free to ask questions. I will be happy to help all I can.

I am attaching the flyer for the race.

Blessings, Terry

Hi Billy, cool plane.

This is probably not the best place for you question however. For one thing, that plane is too big for our racing. You're more likely to get an answer in the giant scale forum, or start your own thread so the Giant scale racers will see it.

One of our guys built the Thunder Tiger Rare Bear last year but the wing broke in two on landing in it's first heat.

I've just finished three planes for our next race. An Extreme Cub with Nelson power, a Phoenix Models Strega w/YS 1.10 and a VQ Hurricane w/YS 1.10. I hope to maiden them this weekend. I say this to show that there are a wide variety of planes that will work well for RCPRO.

Racers are welcome to come to our field for the next two weekends to practice on our course. We will have the pylons up. Just let us know that you are planning to fly in the warbird race and we will waive the daily fee for non members.

Blessings, Terry

Make sure to get some pics and report on the Hurricanes performance in the racing. I noticed with mine that when the mains touch the ground you keep your hand on the elevator or else it will nose in and grind due to the front weight, the upside is the steering and ground handling are awesome on this plane.

Tally Ho!

Are there any Warbird races scheduled for the Kingman area or even the Las Vegas or any of the surrounding areas in the near future?

still4given , is this the infamous cub with the custom wing and Nelson motor that I've heard so much about??? If so, how do I find out more about it? Like, which brand/model it is,the motor ,things of that nature. We have no pylon racers here but My buds and I fly sport as fast as we can... and I just like fast.. Thanks, TJ

The Cub was a brainstorm of the Phoenix/Prescott AZ guys. I believe Mike Del Ponte was the developer but I know he had help to get it to completion. It has a 400 sq in wing with I believe an SD 6060 airfoil. Mine had a Nelson Q500 engine, but Mike's had a Q40 engine on it. His was faster than mine. THe cubs were custom built to compete at SAMs a few years ago when they were still legal per their rules. I believe the rules were changed afterward and now you can't fly a cub there. They are still legal in RCPRO along with any other propellor driven military plane built after January 1, 1937. I heard though the grapevine that Mike's cub just met it demise last week. Bummer It was going to fly at next weeks warbird race in Phoenix. Hopefully someone is building another one for him so he can fly with us. I'll be flying my FrankenStang (can be seen in another thread on this forum) in gold class. If you can make it to the race, Mike will probably be there and he can tell you about it. Definitely an attention getter.

Blessings, Terry

Coming soon to a warbird race near you, Robert Vogel's "Super" Hellcat. An RCFW kit modified by Robert and to be powered by a "massaged" YS 1.40. Hope the wings stay on it!

I think it's going to be right at 9 pounds RTF. My prototype is 10 1/4 pounds and flies great so at 9 pounds this one should be absolutely delightful and with all that wing should handle the turns nicely.
