Any interest in a machined SS straight header for YS?
Hey Guys,
I know many of you use the stock exhaust header without the muffler or use the NMP "Brake line" style headers. I designed and turned a header for my YS last night. It's one solid piece of stainless steel. The ID has 95% more area than the stock header. I haven't seen a NMP unit in person, but I'm sure they are close to the stock ID also. I'm thinking about having a run of these made on a CNC machine. They would cost around $15.
I just got laid off last week, so I'd like to know how many of you would be interested before I plunk down the cash to get them made.
Thanks,
Chris

Did you get a significant increase in power/rpm's? I don't have a YS but if I do get one it would definitely be a consideration.

Barry,
Honestly I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I will be out at the field later this week and I will do a back to back comparison on the ground.

RE: Any interest in a machined SS straight header for YS?
I tested the new header out today. It seems to yield a couple hundred RPM over the stock unit. I wasn't able to do a back to back because the ratchet I brought broke when I tried to loosen the header nut. [:@]
The really sad part is it was a 1/2" Craftsman that has had very little use. Thankfully you can exchange them at OSH.
I optimized the design a little further today. The bore now has double the area of the stock header.
I've got the material ordered and should have the production run done in about 2 weeks.

After some feedback I increased the bore and lengthened the headers to 2.5".
Here is a picture of the first batch of headers. The Sacramento group snagged the entire run. I will be making another run shortly.
If you are interested, please send me an email to get on the preorder list.
Thanks,
Chris

Hey Guys,
I have a bunch of these in stock now. I am selling them for $20 each for 1 or $18 each for 2 or more. The price includes shipping.
I sent 20 to the guys in Sacramento a couple weeks ago and their observation is that they were picking up a couple hundred rpm over the stock YS headers.
If you're interested please email or PM me.
Thanks,
Chris

RE: Any interest in a machined SS straight header for YS?
I just got off the phone with Richard Verano. He went to the USRA event at Rabbit last weekend and flew in the Sundowner class. He was running a YS 170 DZ and used one of my headers for the exhaust. He managed to set a new class record over the weekend even though it was the first time he flew in the class.
Congratulations Richard!
Congratulations Richard!

Hey Chris,
You can add a SAM's Gold Series Champion to your list of buyers. My Gold plane was wearing a YS equiped with one of your headers when it won the Tres Kahuna Classic, the Trashman 2 day race, and the SAM Gold Series championship. The pipes are so much bigger (ID) (dare I say better) than the NMP headers. Thank you for your support this past year of the SAM series.
Now you need to work on something for these two stroke guys so they can boost their ponypower. (said jokingly)

Guys,
If you haven't tried one of these headers by Chris you're missing out. Great quality, they work with the original nut that came with the stock header, and if you desire to have a shorter header you can cut them down and even angle the cut to work with your install. I highly recommend them!

Hey guys,
Things have slowed down and I'm sitting on a bunch of YS 63-70 sized headers. I will let them go for $12 each shipped.
Thanks,
Chris

Hey Chris,
I sent you a PM. Love your headers but crashes have seriously reduced my supply.
Miss you around here!
Blessings, Terry

Hey Guys,
Jimmy Skids finally prodded me enough to get another batch of headers made. If you are in the Sacramento area RC Country will be stocking them. Jimmy will also have them for sale at SAMS.
If you are outside the Sacramento and you would like to purchase one please contact me via PM.
Thanks,
Chris

RE: Any interest in a machined SS straight header for YS?
All,
In October of 2011 I did some informal testing of the headers produced by Chris. The testing consisted of 3 different headers... an NMP header, a YS curved header, and the one from Chris. I used a YS 120AC on 30% nitro turning a 14x12N APC prop for all the testing. The first two headers both had rpm readings of 9750 to 9850 and the header from Chris read from 9850 to 10000. All tests were done using the same fuel within a 1 hour time period. My guess would be that as nitro is increased and/or the motor unloads in flight you would see a higher difference in the measurements between each header.
As a side note, the material used is such that it tends to break if you crash or have a similar type of negative landing. It's much easier to replace the header vs. having the head damaged. Also, the headers can be cut to fit your application. Good stuff.

Can't blame Chris for wanting to do something RC with his son, and his son is into cars, strikes me as odd when dad and grandad are both into planes, but there you go.
I have run Chris' headers on all my Y.S. engines I love them work great.

RE: Any interest in a machined SS straight header for YS?
Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. I do miss seeing alot of you but getting back into flying would be pretty hard for me right now. Jacob and I are having fun racing cars though. It has taken me quite a while to get up to speed, but I qualified 2nd out of 25 4wd Short Course trucks over the weekend. My times are getting competitive and I'm having fun. Jacob is getting better. He still drives like the throttle is an on/off switch though. in January a friend that I used to race boats with and his boys started racing with us. Our wives have known each other since grade school and the boys have known each other all their lives. They're having fun racing and playing together at the track. My poor father-in-law has tried to lure all of his grandkids into flying and none of them are interested.
