RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.
Speaking of YS91 sized planes...
Here are a couple vids of a plane I may race in Silver this year.
Custom designed and built by Steve N of the SAMs.
A picture of the real thing.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.
Nice video and plane Tommy, but if I wanted to be a thorn in your side (which I feel so inclined at the moment), Im not sure if this plane would be legal to race on technical grounds. The rules say that it must be a plane that was in "production." Since there was only one experimental model that crashed before it had a chance of getting a contract with the government, I feel that this model would not qualify for racing. But what the hell, Im not racing racing in Silver so what do I care !

Well Jake,
I guess I could race another P-51 Mustang out there............. YEAH RIGHT!
Tell ya what, how about I just call it a Phoenix Strega?

If you are going to be producing these experimental models, why not see if he can make an ME-209. Now that would be a racer we could both appreciate .

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.
We just went thru a few rules changes in the last few months. We try not to open that can of worms too often.
I am a bit of a PITA when it comes to some of the rules with regards to planes not looking as they should.
The MB-3 was obviously a plane meant to go into service to blast Axis aircraft from the skies.
Jake does bring up a valid point as to the plane never going into "production". It did in fact exist and was flown however.
This is not a PM Strega or a Super Cub. It is a nice scale representation of an actual plane that was meant to carry 6x 20MM cannons and blast away at the enemy.
As I said, I'll run it past the CD of the event. They are the final word.

I just look to see how far the boundaries can be pushed. I feel, the way T-Gun does about the plane being able to race. It looks scale, it was real and correct time period, and it is something different so I say go with it. But if I had the building experience this could open the realm for some pretty interesting planes to be produced for racing. If SAMS ever does open the rules again, I think this should be something to be considered.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.
From S.A.M rules
"The only models qualified to be entered in a SAM Warbird event must be scale* models replicating heavier than air, fixed wing, piston engine powered, man carrying, fighter or fighter-bomber aircraft that were in production after January 1, 1937, or scale models of non-military aircraft that have raced in the unlimited category of the Reno Air Races. To “have raced†means that the aircraft must have crossed the starting line while participating in an official heat. Observation or trainer aircraft that may have been modified to carry a weapon in unique circumstances do not qualify as fighter or fighter-bombers."
The way I interpret the rules is if it races in Reno then it can race at SAMs

That is true, if it raced in the Reno Unlimited you are good, but the Martin Baker did not race in Reno and was not put into production, hence the dilemma.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.
As a silver racer myself I have no problem with it as I believe it is with in the spirit of the rules. Define production, it was an aircraft made to fight, it was produced into a full prototype and flew, then to me it qualifies.
I have an idea for a cool racer that would be fun, but it would be a hell of a difficult build, and I have not done the research to know if it actually was a fighting plane etc.
I may bring a fun bronze plane to race as well.

If that is the case, I want to build the "Bonita" which is the Tail Dragger P-39 Prototype. Only one was made but it was intended as a fighter.

Just got word from the CD's and rulmakers.
Prototypes are not within the rules. It must be a production aircraft.
No MB-3 in SAMs racing.........for now.

I had a feeling, but good to know for future reference. I can always sniff out a technicality when I see one. Ho Hum....I guess you are just going to have to race that rice-burnin, Sake Suckin, Japanese bandit of yours.

What is the wing area and engine?
You can get the rules from James Gale at [email protected],
but you can race any Warbird airplane with minimum 515 sq inches with up to a 1.60 engine( 2-stk or 4 stk ) . Read the rules, but airplane options are endless. Same rules as Madera.
and...no breakouts.
This year, we are going to a longer course, 700ft.

120 Warbird 550 sq min. max 1.20 engines ( No heli or DF engines )
Unlimited Warbird 515 sq min max 1.60 engines ( no restrictions )
Course is 700 ft long
