Kyosho FW-190 mods for racing. "Sorgenkind Vier"
Working on another to maybe have ready for the April 12th race in Sacramento.
This one will use a YS120SC and a custom foam wing that gives me the area to allow it.
The new wing is thinner on the chord cross section than the stock ARF wing.
Also since the 120 is longer than the 110 previously used, I had to cut an additional 3/8" off the nose to allow for proper placement of the engine. Shortening the nose has helped to prevent CG issues with the heavier engines up front. I also decided to key the new firewall to the inside of the nose instead of just slapping it onto the front. This looks like it is going to be plenty strong.
I will be stripping the fuselage on this one and glassing it with epoxy and 1/2oz cloth before applying a thin coat of paint.

Looking good T-Gun. Does not leave much time to practice if you are going to have this one ready by next month. I am still working on the wing on my Veltro so I it looks like I am racing either a 190 or Hurricane in Bronze. Good luck on getting this bird ready, and praying that we don't see a "funf".

I plan to use the wing for back to back testing against the "race wing" on this airframe.
If that does not pan out, I'll let you know.

Jimmy,
Don't you keep a picture of the "enemy" posted on your garage wall as a reminder of why you're doing all that hard work? It just needs dome crosshairs drawn on it.

Funny how Jimmys selective scan missed my Hells Aces T- Shirt art to the right of the Spitfire image.
By the way, Chris is right, that picture was cropped to remove the FW190A6 that was on it's tail.

If all works out as I hope, I will be capable of pushing you into a breakout Jimmy.
Well I have the basic structures all worked out. Fuselage is reinforced where H-stab mounts. Hinging is finished. Pushrods routed and installed. Servos and tank as well as the AR9000 Rx is mounted. A little work to re-close the belly and I'll be ready to glass the wing and fuselage before paint. I plan to fly it next Wednesday evening.

Tom,
If you want some help Wednesday(with handling the plane, radiotrim, timing, or anything else I can do for you), let me know. I just started vacation, so I'm free, now.

Thanks ID,
I'll give you a call before I go. If not Weds, then Thurs before the club meeting.
Epoxy is drying on last of glass application as I type this.
Should be able to sand, install control surfaces, and paint tomorrow.

First off, thanks to all the folks that showed up to assist and think good thoughts.
Iron Dog, LeadFoot, TeddyBear, Steve, and Mr. Ed it was nice to have such support.
It went well, save for me making a few mistakes.
I brought it home with just a few scuffs.
Here is how she looks in the air.
I am still breaking this engine in so I am not asking too much of Mr. Scott just yet.
When I get another four or five tanks thru it I'll pump the nitro up as see how she goes. As it is now on 20% it's a Silver class plane.
But there is more power to be had from the engine I'm sure

RE: Kyosho FW-190 mods for racing.
Sorry, I'm a little late with this update.
As of testing last Saturday I have decided to not even assemble the stock wing.
The custom wing I built for this plane coupled with the YS 1.20 SC has proven to be a great combination.
In testing with 20/20 and a 14x12 prop I was able to run a loose course and finish 10 laps in 1:37. No too shabby. I have to say this new plane feels much better going around the course than my previous 190.
After a couple more flights on the 20/20 I decided to bump it up and ran some 30% heli mix. This ran even stronger. I did not get any formal times on it but I could feel and see that it was faster still.
Then, for the full race check out,. I loaded 16oz of 55% and installed an APC 14x13 full blade and tuned it a bit. I noticed right away this engine was very easy to tweak as I increased nitro compared to the 1.10S. I also seemed to notice that the 120SC ran smoother in all settings relative to my 1.10's. After the final tweaking with the needle backed off from peak and set to 9600 RPM static, I topped off the tank and started up again for a run on the course.
Result, I ran another 10 laps nice and relaxed except for the last two. In those laps I was feeling the need to turn harder on the south pylon and I forced an accelerated stall twice in a row on the same turn! This resulted in a slight tuck into the turn which upon my correction caused the plane to balloon up about 50 ft as I rolled back onto the front straight. Even with these mistakes I ran a 1:31 !!
Then Serge has me set up for a pass on the radar gun. I got out on the south end with about 200 ft alt and settled in on a run to the gun. This showed 170 MPH for the blunt nosed bullet. I'm a happy camper!
So, who wants a stock Kyosho 190 wing?? Slim?
