Good Racing Planes

RE: Good Racing Planes
If you are asking about scale warbird racing then look at this page of this thread for ideas.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_96...mpage_6/tm.htm
Notice the large number of a particular type of plane.
Then ask yourself if you want to be just another in the crowd.
Ask about any of the pictures you see for input.

RE: Good Racing Planes
For warbird racing, the World Models P-51 is probably the most popular. I have seen them used in all three classes with good success. The Kyosho models are very popular too but you have to check the wing area, though I think with SAM's new chart that is not as critical now.

That's funny, I didn't notice his screen name. The plane Tony is talking about is my Racing cub. The first one I ever saw fly was in Tony's hands. His was faster than mine.

is there any EP racing ones[8D]

If you are not concerned about scale racing, there are already some electric classes that are approaching the 200 mph realm.
There are also a few clubs that run EP warbirds in the 36" span size.

RE: Good Racing Planes
Most shoulder-wing Q500's use two 1/4-20 nylon bolts in front, and two 10-24's in the trailing edge. In over 20 years of racing I can't say I've seen any failures in flight, and the fact that oftentimes in a crash they don't even break pretty much confirms that the flight loads aren't close to the limits of the nylon bolt's strength.

RE: Good Racing Planes
Gary,
I think you got lost. The Q-40/Q-500 thread is another forum...LOL.....
What up Bro...Miss you!!
I can back up Gary on the Nylon bolts. With all the Q-500's I have been through, never had one fail unless I hit the ground. Then everything failed.

RE: Good Racing Planes
I must say wow. I wouldve never thought. I have used 1/4x20's on my 42% F1 race landing gear. That takes a good amount of stress sometimes. I guess the difference is the wing bolts have all their resistance straight up where my landing gear had it at a 90 degree angle.
Ive got a Lyle Larson Proud Bird that needs wing bolts. I guess I now know what I can use- thanks guys

Mongo...doing good. Been working up near Salt Lake City for the last few months, leaving for Iraq around the middle of July. You should go down to the Basin race next weekend
MFLOOD...On Q40's I typically use the same bolt combination as I do on Q500's....1/4-20's on the leading edge and 10-24's at the trailng edge. I've also done several with just three bolts, using a 1/4-20 on the trailing edge. I prefer nylon bolts over metal primarily because they're less likely to come loose due to vibration.
