RE: Looking for a 1/12th size range Warbird
You know the the Lawnmower Man, Steve O, has one of these spits with, I think, a YS. 53 in his and all I can say is.....damn!
It sure looks like a gold capable plane.

RE: Looking for a 1/12th size range Warbird
I was reading this thread this morning thinking, "I wonder if I could get one of my old YS.53s or .63s in one of those Spits or P-40s, like I got one into the old PP ModelTech P-51. I betthis combinationwould make a good practice plane as an intermediate step for getting used to Gold speeds; or, another alternative to the Outlaws' Bf109."
Now, here we are, all thinking the same thing at almost exactly the same time! So, just for the record . . . "I'd do it! Let's go fast!"
(Todd, we also responded with the same answer at the same time on Tom's thread . . . "Jinx!", again. I'm starting to wonder if we are spending too much time together!)

I'll be using E-Flite's new electric .10-.15 sized retracts in my spitfire. But I will probably belly land it on our grass field. Mainly the wheels are for taking off, since I use a high-pitch prop and hand launches have proved difficult.
I don't like the look of the aileron servos on the top of a wing.
Some of the other GP combat planes have servo hatches. Which is 10x better, but I chose not to rectify that with custom hatches. Just lazy.
How much trouble am I going to have belly landing this on short grass with the servos sticking out the bottom of the wing?
I'll be using a Saito 40. I expect it to be pretty fast with a 10x9 prop.

My servos stick out, but the dihedral of the wing keeps mine from striking the grass. The grass is cut low though, so I guess it would depend on the surface you are landing on.
I did a couple more flights yesterday in the heat. Toned down those throws and now it feels just like one of my big racers. The Healdsburg race is this Sunday, so wish me luck, I will take some pics and let you know how it goes. I think I will keep my current setup on it and see how it does, this is a race to get a feel of what this venue is like, I have never even stepped on the the field so this will be new for me.

Well, I weenied out the the race, for one good reason and one "weenie" reason. First the good, we found out we will be moving to another place so we only have about 3 weeks to get ready so the chores got stacked up. Now the "weenie," I was hot and just didn't want to be in the heat all day. Oh well, there is always next time.
tdstaf:
These races are held just north of Healdsburg so I don't know if you would want to make that trek, a bit of a drive for a small venue, but do make it out to SAMS August 1st .

Went to the race and had a great time. Good bunch of flyers out there. Just a little patchwork is needed on the plane, but will try to make it for the next race. Thanks for the invite Red.

RE: Looking for a 1/12th size range Warbird
Here are our rules if any of you are thinking about coming to play. PM me for my phone # if you want to talk shop.
1/12th Scale Reno Racing Class Rules
The purpose of this race is to provide a Warbird/Reno type racing class. Aircraft are to be 1/12th scale +/- 5% and will allow for twin aircraft and a specified engines. Reno type color schemes are encouraged but not required.
Airframe
• The model must be scale replica of a pursuit, fighter, or attack aircraft produced or in service between 1935 and 1955, or have raced in a Reno, Mojave or Cleveland Unlimited heat. For the purpose of this contest, an aircraft shall be considered a pursuit, fighter, or attack aircraft if its missions routinely involved, or its designer intended any of the following:
a) interception of enemy aircraft;
b) high-speed ground or sea attack;
c) dog fighting;
d) long- and short-range escort.
• The aircraft must have been originally designed to have had onboard guns installed. Aircraft that had guns mounted for defensive purposes only shall not qualify as pursuit, fighter, or attack aircraft.
• Aircraft must resemble their full-scale counterparts, and be 1/12th scale +/- 5%.
• All deviations from scale outline must be within five (5) percent of each other and within five (5) percent of scale, and retain scale shape and proportions. For example, scaling a model’s wingspan up 5% and the fuselage down 5% is not allowed. The deviations shall all be in the same direction (plus or minus); it is not permissible to scale some elements up and others down. Fuselages must be fully built, no profiles allowed. Landing gear not required.
Engine
• Only Magnum or O.S. .30 4 strokes will be allowed. Engines must remain unmodified.
• The Only exceptions are:
Glow plug of choice
Muffler may be removed
Any prop
Any fuel

RE: Looking for a 1/12th size range Warbird
Well, now that I am done with the SAM's warbird racing for the season I can focus on the Wine Country Flyers racing. Had a bit of a crappy landing in my last race there since my motor cutoff when I was bringing her in for a landing. It broke the motor mount and put a little hole in the wing and trashed the cowling. After a little work and some new parts, she is looking good and back for action. I think the problem with the cutoff was that the motor does not like 20% fuel. I am running an APC 9X6 prop and it runs and idles great with 15%, but it will not idle at all with the Cool Power 20%, no matter what adjustments I make. This kind of puts me in a jam. In the first heat I was in I was slower than the pack, so I changed to 20% and that made a huge difference, but then when I need to throttle back down for landings it shuts down. Anyone got any ideas or tips to help me out? Any props out there you would recommend to get the airspeed up? Any help out there would be appreciated. Regardless I will be racing tomorrow. Thanks
Jake
