Default 2011 race planes

With only two races left in norcal ( SAMs and Tomcats ) and especially with me coming into the season late, I have to admit that I am really looking forward to the 2011 racing season. Although the Macchi has exceeded my expectations my competitiveness wont allow me to not manage my way into the Gold and Unlimited classes.

I am sure I am not the only one with something new on the boards for next season, so let's see 'em guys...........whats in the works?

Shawn,

Just to let you know, we are updating some of the rules in our classes to spread the wealth with airplanes. If you want to peak at the rules and give some input, let me know. You can stop by one evening and take a looky!!!! Warn me ahead of time so I can put away all my secret weapons!!!

I've got 2 composite P-39s on the way. Each will be powered by a YS110. I just started painting, today.

I hope to finish my P-47 after the last couple races.

And, let's not forget that there is still one other race. Dale Kralis putting on the "Two-Minute Tango" on October 24th, also.

I finished sheeting my new wings for the either Stiletto or Tsunami for .46 modified/Silver.

My first time doing foam wings. Went the vacuum route.

Seemed to come out pretty well.

If I sight down the leading edge there might be a slight bow.

Perhaps my pool table is not as flat as I think.

Got some wings cut and sheeted, just finishing up on the small stuff before glassing starts. On the .60 size Macchi I decided to go with retracts. First time I have done a retract install from start to finish. Wasn't as difficult as I thought. Has to go with a set of Great Planes .40 size units in order to get them to fit. Looking forward to racing next year but may have to come for a flying visit and hang with some of you Sac guys.

We should have at least two of these for the 2011 season.

Great start, Chad!

I saw that on your Hellcat build thread you were offering those kits for sale. Are you offering the "CzechMate" kit for sale, as well?

Thanks Iron Dog. Don't really have plans at this point to kit the Yak but I will most likely make plans and possibly the cowl/canopy available if it flies well. I would be willing to provide the cutting files to a reputable laser cutting service as well if their is interest. All assuming the airplane flies well of course.

Well Chad, if it flies well, and you choose to . . . I'm definitely interested.

What is the wing area?

Ollie
I'll start a thread on it when we get a bit further Ollie so anyone interested can keep track of progress. If you calculate the wing area to include the portion contained within the confines of the fuselage the area is right at 750 square inches. If you subtract the area occupied by the fuselage you end up with about 625 squares. Span is 66 inches (wing has been stretched some), the overall length is 49 inches not including the spinner, and the cowl is 8 inches in diameter. It sounds bigger than it really is when you see it in the flesh. It actually looks smaller, i.e. has less volume, than my 64 inch span Hellcat. We are hoping for a ready to fly weight of no more than 9 pounds. (The Hellcat in race trim is about 10.25 pounds) Stay tuned...

A little more progress, I got servo boxes installed and wires in place, next I will be glassing. Thinking I may paint the whole airplane this time. Retract install came out pretty well I think.

Speed,

I'm building my 2011 plane out of maple and rubberized CA.... If I can't fly through you then maybe I can just bounce off ya.
Seriously, my 2011 plane should hopefully come out a bit stronger and faster, even though it doesn't really need to be faster.... insert theme music from 6 million dollar man series.

Jimmy, Looks like the trash talk is starting early hahah. As we get closer to race season I will remind you that you will have to catch me to fly through me.

Seriously though I am looking forward to getting these two birds in the air and racing with you guys again. The gold Macchi should be pretty fast. I'm looking at a finished weight of around 7 lbs and it is being powered with a Rossi 61 FIRE that I spent 2 days grinding on. Gotta get it on a bench and do some pipe and prop testing soon. Actually found some Titanium bearings for it too so obviously curious how it does.

The smaller Macchi has a slightly more aggressive airfoil then the last one but I'm going to keep her in silver but should pretty much rule .46 modified here in San Jose.

OK making slow progress but getting closer. The tails are all mounted and hinged. All that is left on both of them is to hinge the ailerons and they are ready for cover and paint. When a CF pipe I ordered comes in I will start testing the engine with different pipe and prop combinations for the gold airplane. I know the combo that works well for the silver airplane so leaving it alone. Besides my hope is that my daughter will pilot that one in bronze next year.
