Very cool!
Do any of you know if they have finished finalizing their new rules yet? I hope to make at least one of their races this year and want to see what I have that will work.

Blessings. Terry

Terry,

Kevin Norred forwarded the new set of rules to our group a couple days ago. It looked to me like the only changes were to the wing area/motor chart.

Hopefully SAMS will post the new rules pretty soon.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

I did get the rules from Jerry and Mark. I can send anyone a set if needed. Just email me at [email protected]

They did adjust the wing areas and engine sizes. Here is the list.

Single Engine Displacement/Wing Area Table:

.80 1.19 515
.95 1.29 550
1.05 1.39 565
1.10 1.49 580
1.15 1.59 595
1.20 1.69 610
1.30 1.75 630
1.40 1.80 650

Multi Engine Displacement/Wing Area Table:

2 Stroke 4 Stroke Minimum
Maximum Maximum Wing Area
Total Displacement Total Displacement

Cubic Inches Cubic Inches Square Inches
1.00 1.50 500
1.22 2.00 600
1.40 2.50 700

Also, aircraft are to be more scale representations. No more Phoenix Stregas allowed or knock offs.....

So it's official for SAMS the new wing area table?

We are awaiting AMA approval.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

Wow, that's a really strange list. Only a handful of engine sizes that are actually produced.

What does Knock-off mean? Stand-off scale? I knew they had banned the PM Strega, but are there some other popular ARF's that are out as well?

The AMA approved our RCPRO rules without any wing area chart so I can't see them having a problem with these.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

It was a good day boys, had a break in the weather after having two weeks of non stop rain. Took the Voodoo and the spitfire out for the maiden flight. Spitfire flew great and no problems, same with the Voodoo untill I took it up for the second flight and had an issue with the retracts not coming down. Had a nice soft belly landing in the mud with no damage, turns out the new retract servo I installed had a bad gear in it. Looking forward to the first race in April

The Sacramento Area Modelers was on the news this morning with a few of the guys you all might recognize. Even Tommy Gun's airplane makes a breif apperance as it flips off the runway! Way to crash on live tv Tommy! This was great exposure for the Sacramento Area Modelers and warbird racing! Way to go guys!

Great video segment and way to go with getting community recognition of the hobby/sport. It is going to be a little hard for Tommy to live that down. I see a new nickname in the future....................Mr. Choke :D! Got to get my jabs in before April.

quick question if i had a wing area of 434 could i run a 90 4 stroke in there?

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

Good question. I would assume that some of the numbers in the chart are ranges but I'm not sure which they are. You would think that since 400 allows an .89 that 434 would be more than enough for .02 cubic inch more but do you have to go all the way to 440 before you can go over .89? I'm interested in how this works too.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

You are going to have to contact Jerry Votaw or some of the guys running the show. I havent been up there in a while, but plan on making several if not all the races this year.

Here is how I was explained and I hope I am correct. For the final say, contact the SAM club.

The minimum wing area is 400, there for you can run a max engine of .50 / .89 ( 2-stroke/4-stroke )
To run a engine such as a .91 4-stoke, you have to have a minimum of 440 squares, no less.

and if you have a new Y.S. 115 soon to come out, you have to have a minimum of 515 squares...but check with the SAM group to confirm. I think the 1.10 also is 515 sqs.

2 Stroke 4 Stroke Minimum
Maximum Maximum Wing Area

Cubic Inches Cubic Inches Square Inches
.50 .89 400
.60 .99 440
.70 1.09 480
.80 1.19 515
.95 1.29 550
1.05 1.39 565
1.10 1.49 580
1.15 1.59 595
1.20 1.69 610
1.30 1.75 630
1.40 1.80 650

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

All,

I was the one who did most the re-write on the rules and Kevin's last post is correct. The wing area chart and the rest of the rules haven't been officailly approved just yet. The current SAM president hasn't got the full approval from AMA although Ellis Hall has stated that he believes everything looks good. Just being formal about the process and waiting respectfully for AMA to respond.

Basically if you're looking at just the wing area chart for 4 strokes it would go.....

.01 to .89 has to have a minimum of 400 sqaure inches
.90 to .99 has to have a minimum of 440 square inches
ETC, ETC.

The reason it may look "strange" or like it doesn't have a lot of engines in production is because it covers all engines in production and yet to be produced. My intent was to "try" to have a set of rules that wouldn't need up dating with every new engine that hits the market. And before everyone jumps in with RCPro not having a wing area to displacement comment.... let me just say that I understand and that's fine for them, just won't be happening for SAM's. The re-write was done in an effort to open up the racing to other engine choices and possibly allow some of the racers from the neighboring area to come race with us. The new rules have opened up access for the bay area guys flying .75 2 strokes in the SF/Fresno area to come fly if they would like to.

Once I hear of approval I will have the webmaster post new new rule to the SAM site and post a link here.

P.S. - Leadfoot, Nice Video Clip..... I especially like the shot of Precious Metal winning the race!:)

o ok plane and simple i guess HA.

RE: SAMS 2010 Warbird Race Schedule.

Thanks Skids,

That clears it up. I figured it was a range, just wasn't sure which part. 440 is still a pretty small wing for a YS .91 so I think anyone running one won't have much trouble going fast. I called Ellis Hall and Jim Giffin when we changed our rules and they both were fine with it so I'm sure you guys won't have a problem. I just heard that the Jim Giffin, the AMA district X VP, passes away. Mike Brown is the new VP and I haven't spoken with him yet, but I'm sure he will be Ok too. I'm still hoping to make at least one of your races this season.

Blessings, Terry

Thanks Skids, I was kinda wondering when Bushman built a Precuous Metal racer. I saw how happy he was when the reporter went up to him and called him the winner! I guess the with the right plane and setup anybody has a chance of winning. Way to lose gracefully. :D

Even reporters don't always get their facts straight. Bushman was flying Dago, I believe that plane was second which is otherwise known as 1st........
