RE: How to get into scale helis?
A 30 size Raptor can be setup scale, it's not a big issue to trim the pitch arm and parts are so cheap, you can afford a few mistakes. The fun never stops!
There is a link to a walk through on building a raptor twinstar scale heli just go to funscale.com click on helicopter link and look for twinstar build pages

RE: How to get into scale helis?
Lol 3 photos so far sorry!! more to come i promise!! well for a start hirobos packaging was the excellent, much much better than anything ive seen yet. its even better than what the EC-135 came in.
Instructions are very clear and you will zoom through this heli especially if you have everything you need to complete it. All bags are numbered so you will only need to open one bad per step of the intructions.
The schweizer's rear is powered via tail drive and has a front mounted rudder servo.
The Canopy...which it basically is, is made from high quality abs ( i expected fiberglass! ) the scale fitting like the exterior fuel tanks are plastic i think as is the stablizer. need further look at them. I mean come on this is a perfect first heli i think. More to come soon

yup, only anoying part so far was a set of 4 screws which i guess were oversized for the job and wouldnt go in without a fight. That was on the servo tray, which as also part metal! it didnt take long to get that far its surprisingly quick or time just flies when your havng fun.

RE: How to get into scale helis?
i thought it was impossible, but hirobo missed out a part!! it wasnt in anybag and was quite large....
Without the universal hub i cant attach the tail.
I have plenty more photos coming, all the hirobo self taping screw have tightening trouble its quite annoying and i would do anything for the screw to go in easier.Any ideas?
did you know that the undercarriage is scale and spring loaded

RE: How to get into scale helis?
Brandon,
If you want give me a call, and we can really discuss the heli/learn/scale/ ideas. Again, in brief as a summary,
1 Simulator.....you have done that.
2 Raptor to actually learn things like settling with power, turns in wind, autorotations. Without intent on making a scale ship.
3 You can start working on building a good scale ship from like Vario or just from various mfg parts.
4 Scale in heli's is going to cost.
You can't go wrong with Vario or Graupner, but they are the cadillacs. Hirobo is very proprietary, century is some. Both of their scale ships require their 'special' mechanics.
Yes you can stuff a Rappy in to many Funkey fuses, but it just is not the same.
Watch ScaleRCHelis.com more often, that IS the site for scale, give folks a chance to respond. Don't be shy. I saw your post and responded. Then RR is also out there, but you have to deal with Mark Ryders censorship.
Seriously, give me a call sometime today, I will PM ya my number again.
Jack

Hello 270, spare part hasnt come yet but I have plenty more photos to come unless you have already chosen a heli. Whole heli is assembled, only painting to do.

RE: How to get into scale helis?
I had pretty much decided on a Raptor but then a buddy of mine offered me a "deal" on a Hirobo shuttle.... We'll see what the "deal" is in a few days. I'd love to see more pics!!

RE: How to get into scale helis?
Hello, it might be cheap because Ebay do a similar price or they just ant to get rid of them. It will probably come with a basic 700mAh battery and yes it is ready to fly.
Not very good quality and is quite a basic heli. But good for a laugh.

One cool thing about small electric helis is that they can help you learn basic orientation if you're new to heli flight. So far that's all I have, a Hirobo XRB and a Blade CP.

RE: How to get into scale helis?
jumping in on this because i want to keep informed on this topic.
i too have been really wanting to get into helis. i fly both scale and acro planes (and both giant scale). i like flying acro, but i also like seeing scale planes... that FLY scale like too!
i plan on buying a raptor 30 with the intent of one day getting into scale helis. in particular, i'm very fond of the century 222. according to their website chart the fuse will fit on the raptor's mechanics.

Yes it will fit, but modifications will be needed. But since you have been flying fixed as well I guess you shouldnt have problems on wood work.

RE: How to get into scale helis?
I don't think there's a Bell 222 body that will fit the Raptor 30.... But I think it's probably the best beginner heli out there. At least it is around here, the LHS has enough parts built one piece by piece. When I was first getting started I really thought that I would have a hard time learning to fly helis. These small electrics have really helped instill confidence and saved me lots of money.
I haven't spoken to my buddy about his Hirobo yet. Maybe later this week. The helicopter is RTF. He's even going to let me fly it some before deciding whether to buy or not. If I decide to take it he'll remove his receiver and the rest is mine. It'll have to be cheap, if it's not I'll go buy a new/used Raptor.

RE: How to get into scale helis?
Yeah, the chart on century's site said the raptor 30/50 will fit in the 222's body. It just might need some mods.
I just picked up a raptor this week that I thought was a pretty good deal. I got a 30 V2 with 22 flights on it never crashed, 9202 futaba servos, 401 gyro with the 9252 digital tail servo, 2700 NiMH battery, 8 channel futaba pcm receiver, futaba 8UHFS tx, accucycle plus charger, CF main and tail blades, all metal swashplate, and complete field equipment for $700. I wasn't planning on buying so soon but I jumped on that deal.
I can't wait to start flying it. Probably in about a year I'll get into scale. I don't see myself getting into 3d, 3d on a heli just doesn't look right to me or interest me.

RE: How to get into scale helis?
I agree, I know those 3D guys are awesome heli pilots, but it seems to me that once you've seen one 3D routine you've seen them all. I flew my Raptor 30 5 flights today, I'm just hovering it to break in the engine. I just got a Hirobo brochure from my LHS. Apparently they have a pretty good selection of fuses that bolt on with almost zero mods to their Freya helis. They have a Freya .60 that they're going to give me to build for them, just to get me more familiar with helis.... those guys are too cool...
Can't wait to get competent enough to justify a Bell 222 fuse on my Raptor.
