I see the gear is in place - how did you mount it? Did you build the oleo struts you talked about?

Gunder, I have them mostly built. I need to do a little modification to them. Right now they are just pinned in the full out position for setup. I will be ordering a spring for them in a few weeks.

OMT I don't know if Oleo was the right word to use. What defines it as Oleo?

I will get pics the next time she comes off her feet and I can pull them apart to show the pieces.

Looking REAL great.
Have 14hours air experience time in a RAF Chippy back in the earliy 70's... I was 13 years old at the time!
Full package, seat parachutes, old well used, canvas masks with throat switches... brilliant.

One thing that does come to mind... your engine. It's huge... on power.
In europe they're flying real big scale planes on less engine.
Any thoughts?

Hey Dave, I went with the 222 because it seemed like the perfect fit. plus I got it at a deal. Also nothing sounds like a 4 banger on cans. (to me)

An oleo is a shock absorber with an oil chamber, a gas chamber, and a piston that when compressed forces oil through an orifice into the gas chamber, compressing the gas and resisting the shock.

Then No, it's not that! Sorry I use the wrong word. That does sound overly complicated.[8D]

Here you go Rgunder, Right now they a ruffed in. I will be tweeking them a little more before final assembly. Mainly I need to cut another guide slot on the other side.

The aluminum bases were cut from 2" 6061 T6 angle and the tubes are seemless chrome moly. I forget the sizes at the moment.

I have been playing around with using compressed air for shocks rather than just a heavy spring. I have made "plugs" with two O-rings on each one. They work quite well. Not sure whether to procced with that or not.
Later,
Kelly

I'm making progress on the wing fillet. I still have to tweek a couple of them.

I'll be back on the cowl plug in a few days.

Very cool landing gear! I am eager to see how you finish those off. The springs are probably easier, but the compressed air would be a little more forgiving on a hard landing?

I've been working on the cowling plug somemore. I've been applying drywall compound to the plug to smooth it out before I apply the glass and epoxy. After the epoxy I can then use body filler on it to get the final finish before make the mold.

After I get it smoothed out and shaped to fit the fuse,It will have the final 5" added to the back of the plug. (this goes over the fuse)

I got home early today, so I decided to get her outside. This is the first time I've had it out in its "full size". This thing is big!! What was I thinking???!!!

(I had to edit the pix a little because they where overexposed.)

Kelly, really quite a great job. Have you decided how to do your canopy. These big canopies can really be tough to get right. What do you intend to make the mold of as I would think you are going to have it vac formed??
The Super Chipmunk was origionaly designed and flown by Harold Krier. He and Art would later on do some formation acro in the two. You may want to do a search as I believe the aircraft is still being flow.
Love following along on your build.

I'm researching now how to make a vac machine in the next few weeks. Any suggestion? I have a few other thing I want to pull to for my warbirds.
I'm kind in the dark on the form. what do you suggest??

As for the other Chipmunk, I believe it is in South Carolina somewhere. I had his phone# at one time. However, I never contacted him.

The chippy is on pause for a few weeks while I get somemore supplies in. Christmas has to come first.

plus I ran across a deal on a KMP bronco that I couldn't pass up. (my Christmas) So I will be working on both as funds and parts will allow. I really hate to build more than one plane at a time but, My Chippy is the only building I've been doing for a year and a half. Something else to build will get me motivated in the shop agian.

Kelly

BTW I would love to build your T28 oneday. It is just the right size.[8D]

Just fantastic build, I really like to see these out of box scratch builds that are build on magnitude scales!, Kelly you are in different category in my books. I thought it was me only who would build giant scale models by super enlarging the plans or drawings to create one of kind giant scale models....If you get few spare mins, take a look at my ongoing build... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11..._1/key_/tm.htm

I'll be following your build very closely....

OK I know it been a long time since I posted any progress. The bronco is done and flying great. As the nites are getting longer it motivates me to get back out to the shop.

While I'm not back in to a full build yet. I am working on things I have parts for. The rudder and elevators are now covered. I will be glassing the horizontal stabs this week. I would love to have them in primer before Christmas so I can set them aside.

Two girls driving and in collage really limited the hobby budget. LOL
