Default Flaps on Four Star 40

I am scratch building my fourth Four Star 40 wing after a recent crash. I decided to add flaps this time becauseI just want to try something different. I always build this wing one rib bay shorter on each side because the wing just seems too long to me if built according to plans.

Anyway, my question is whether there is a common ration of flap size to aileron size. Just by eyeballing it, I was planning ailerons about 15 1/2 inches long and flaps about 9 inches long(perwing panel of course). So a total of 31 inches of aileron and 18inches of flaps give or take an inch or two. I will also abandon the tapered aileron called for in the plans for a constant width one. I'm thinking those should be about 1-1/8 inches wide.

Thanks in advance for any input on flap size or flap throws. My resource bookon RC designcovers a lot of stuff but not flaps.

Frank

Frank,

My book on design recommends the following:

Aileron: length = 0.35~0.40 wing semispan / chord=0.25 wing chord / 25 degree up - 10 degree down

Flap: length = 0.55~0.60 wing semispan / chord=0.25 wing chord / 60 degree down max

Thanks for the info and the article. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Did the information in your resopnse come from that article or do you have another RC design book? The one Ihave is "Design and Build your own RC Aircraft" by Kenneth Smith. It's a decent book written in the 1980's but I'm just wondering about what others might be out there.

By the way, do you think it's possible to build a flying scale model of "Buzz"? That would be cool...

You are welcome, Frank.

My book is Basics of R/C Model Aircraft Design: Practical Techniques for Building Better Models, written by the late Andy Lennon.

Some people don't like his models and his approach, but I do, and I have learned from and enjoyed that book.

There is also RCadvisor's Model Airplane Design Made Easy, which I have not read, but it seems to have good reviews.

Cool it would be indeed; Buzz is one of my heroes.

Best luck with your interesting project.
