Default 5/32 main landing gear - load capacity??

This is scratch building in a way..........I want to convert an ARF tricycle geared 5 pound model to a tail dragger. Its stock wire gear is 1/8 diameter. I can bend a 5/32 main gear set and add a tail wheel. It is a 5 pounder with a 59" span wing. Would this be too "springy"? I've used 5/32 in about a 4 pounder, but on a larger 5 pounder what would be the result? I want some stiffness.
Thanx for any opinions!.

If you want some stiffness and a landing gear that will take a beating without bending out of shape, go with this one. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXNM65&P=ML

I've used it on planes from a 40 size stick to a Super Aeromaster, and a Four Star 60 with a Mag 91's. It is a landing gear that will outlast many planes, and it will prevent damage to them with is spring. Couple it with a pair of axles.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXD824&P=Mand your wheels, and you are good to go. Mount to a stout landing gear mount with four #10x32 nylon screws and even if you get ugly on a landing and rip the LG off, four new screws and you are ready to fly in a few minutes.

You can paint them to your color scheme, The don't bend. They may break, but with all the damage I've done over the last six years, I've not damaged one of them, and I hold the club record for the worst damage to a plane.

Don.

5/32" should work. Sounds like typical trainer size.

Thanks for the replies. The Dubro unit looks tempting, but I think I will bend a set of 5/32s to try at first.

It also depends on what type of aluminum you are using and the dimensions of the gear. My 6 lb plane has 1/8" aluminum gear, 5/32" should work fine. BTW, Campgems idea of using nylon bolts to mount the gear is a good idea in case you happen to make a really hard landing.

Bending rods i.e. "piano wire" can be tricky. You need to heat and bend it, then temper it again - if not done right the rods will bend too easy or could be brittle and crack ipo bending.

I used to bend up to 5/32" in my vice with a hammer. Never did any coils. 3/16" needs to be bent carefully though. Cant be too tight in the radius or it will crack like was said above. Never did any tempering on the small stuff (5/32 or smaller).
