RE: Scratch Build - 1/8 Scale, C-2A Greyhound
Sorry for getting stuck in the mud but it has been for a couple good causes. Yes, it's off topic but this is what I have been up to. I am the event cordinator for a fund raising event our club is hosting. It's called Wings for Wishes to benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation. Here is a link for our sponsor page as well as the event flyer - http://wow.my2wings.com/ needless to say we have rounded up the mother load of prizes.
The other project I have been involved in is our club is also in the middle of adding a second runway! In the picture the runway will be between the 2nd and 3rd trenches from the left. We have all the sprinkler pipe in and will soon be having it paved as well as hydro seeding.

RE: Scratch Build - 1/8 Scale, C-2A Greyhound
I have spent a quite a bit of time working out the details of my flap system as well as the aileron droop system. I finally got everything drawn up and ready to send to a local person with a laser cutter but they are now moving. I'ts build season again so I am gearing up to get going again - nothing else in the build cue and nothing else allowed on the build table.

Moving right now. Once things get settled I will be able to get back to this again. Just ordered a CNC router for work last Friday, this will also come in handy for cutting out parts.

The plane I started with has been scrapped, the project has not.
I got serious in IMAC and built a 40% Godfrey. Radio problems with a brand new Tx put an end to the Godfrey. Radio has been fixed, two boards replaced and I have flown it a good deal on some foam then moved to a gasser with no issues. Since the loss of the Godfrey and at the time no kits available I designed and built, now covering a 40% PNW of my own design that I will be flying in IMAC this year.
I have resized to a 1/7 scale, changed the way the plane will be built since learning other build methods. Once I get back to this, hopefully next build season, it should build much faster. Wings will be foam core and vacuum bagged. I will most likely do the fuse out of foam and light ply with a balsa/fiberglass skin and paint.

Working on the tail section. As I don't have much original data, I use digital measurements from a 1/48 scale model.
The idea is to build a static model in 1/12, and use the knowledge and data for foam segments to get a lighter aircraft with full function.
So far I collected over 1,000 images on the internet from different C-2A.
There is no decision at this moment what exact color and paint scheme will be built.
Try to get some support from the VRC-30 and VRC-40 for my project. > GO NAVY :-)

All right, I decided to built the C-2A Grumman Greyhound in 1/14 scale. Recently I got some original drawing with good data on. While I do more collecting data, I work on the main gear of the aircaft. This ist interesting as the gear retract and turn to go back under the turbo turbine. Attached two 3D drawings so far. And a sketch of the C-2A first version. Not the (R) Version. Again it is a two o 5 years project, so things may take some time. :-)

Than I would go for full scale :-)
I know bigger is nicer but you need much more space.

Well bigger flies better. I like RAWHIDES version of the C-2a. At one point I had started the scale drawings of the plane and made some headway and also finished the fuselage Rawhides markings. Than I had other projects on the back burner and sort of lost the momentum and the desire in continuing with the project. It is a nice plane which unfortunately is rarely modeled. Anyway, I will keep watching. You have nice 3d drawings of the landing gear! Keep it up

Reuben, It will be not easy to turn the wheel for 90 degrees when it goes back under the engine. Only this small little blue rod is the connection to turn. But as the turn takle place when the plane already departed, it should be more easy. I'll do a rapid prototype to see how it works and where I have to make more modification. Also where I have to make part thicker, even if their are not more 100% accurate. But function is first and then the general look must always fit. Here my reendered part.

Here is another drawing of the Ilyushin Il-28 rotating retract. Notice how the strut is captured nearer to the top with the top end of the strut which could be attached to a fixed point aiding rotation when the strut comes up. I suppose there are many ways in skinning a cat

Reuben, it is not ready, I have to modify some parts, but the C-2A Grumman Greyhound Main Gear works as follow..

I am sure that it is not ready yet. I merely wanted to highlight other methods as well. For example, my P-40 retracts (made by Sierra Giants) has a steel ball on top of the strut which follows a channel to rotate. Very effective. Challenging subject indeed but you have made great strides! Which software are you using?

Did some work on the front wheels
Got some new data and hope that my friends at Atsugi make more images from one of the VRC-30 DET 5 aircraft. But maybe I have a reader from North Island or Norfolk who like to support me, too?

Here a small update of my work.
Beside the landing gears I work on the ramp of the C-2A.
If any reader has detail images, please get in contact with me. Every C-2A data is more than welcome. THANKS

The way from study images, over draw the first sketches to the first 3D CAD Part. A long way to go to have a full scale model.
