question on wood choice
Since spruce is so rare these days...what is recommended to take it's place.A lot of older plans call for spruce spars. Would poplar work in place of spruce? How about basswood?

RE: question on wood choice
I get my spruce at Home Depot as 1 x 6 fence boards selected for the least knots, ripped down to 1/4 sq stringers and 1/2 x 1/4 or 3/8 spar material. I use basswood in areas for easy carving or sanding is required.

RE: question on wood choice
I don't know about Spruce being hard to find. National Balsa has all the sizes I ever need and I have always been pleased with their wood quality, prices, and shipping times.

Thanks, that's great!!......i just looked at their site and doesn't seem to be short there!! I thought there was a nationwide shortage on spruce. Is sitka spruce what we used to use back about 12-14 years ago? Don't know my spruce varieties.....
