Default Tiger Moth Construction steps (updated 09/09)

Hi,

I will document here the construction of my Tiger Moth.

I got the plans from some guy who posted here, then I deleted all the internal structure, scaled the plane to the size I wanted and started the structure and piece fitting from scratch using Autocad. After almost 2 weeks of design I had enough material to start building, so I bought the wood needed.
I tried to locate someone who could laser cut the wood but no one here on Brazil can cut balsa.... and if they could I doubt it would be affordable, so I decided to cut the pieces using my band saw and Scrow saw.

First the Specs:

Wingspan: 2,50m
Lenght: 2,00m (aprox)
Weight: estimated 10Kg
Engine 50cc to 60cc

First pic is the wood. The balsa arrived on Friday and I went to another store to buy the Ply, got some 1/8" naval Ply and 1/64 naval ply for the sheeting of the fuselage

Rudder in place (not glued)

This is the last picture for today. It took me 4 days to get to this point. I'ts going pretty fast.

Tomorrow will finish the rudder, will go look for aluminum to build the top wing structure and maybe start the stab construction, stay tunned!

This Tiger Moth in 2.5m looks very fine...

How it's possible to have a copy of the plan in dxf ?

Sorry for my bad English but I come from France...

Ok, little more updates.

From sunday to today I finished the rudder, cutted all the ribs for the wings (that took me nearly 2 days), built the stab and started to build the bottm wing.

In this picture we see the Rudder, I added the airfoil to it.

And here is the wing. I got one question.

I installed the webs on the aft portion of the main spars, should I place webs on the front portion too? will it really make the wing stronger?

Rodrigo:

Yes, putting the shear webs in front and behind the upper and lower spars will be stronger than having them behind only.

But they will also add weight.

If you are going to have functional flying wires I would not think you have any need at all for the additional webbing. Even with purely decorative flying wires, or none at all, the added strength is probably not needed.

All the above is supposing you are going to sheet the top and bottom of the wing panels from the spar to the leading edge. If you are going to sheet the upper surface only, or no sheeting at all, double the shear webs.

Bill.

Okay, but I thought the upper LE was sheeted on the original.

As far I have seen frm the pictures I downloaded from the net and the small version I have of the Tiger it's not sheeted as the ribs appear on the covering.

Hi!

Most Tiger Moths have LE-slats. But on ost Tigers they are non-functional because they had problems with them. Same with the anti-spin-strakes on the fuse.
