These pictures show the ailerons installed on the wing but not glued. The last picture is a frontal view showing the ailerons flexed upward. Also, this picture shows the wing leading edge dowels installed. NOTE: I didn't install any hinge blocks on the aileron leading edge. The basswood is strong enough that the hingeblocks are not needed in this wood. Had I been useing balsa with CA or flat hinges, I would have surely installed hingeblocks here just like I did on the wing trailing edge.

Now to start the second wing for the other plane. You may not see any pictures for awhile as it will simply be a repeat of this one. I may take one or two pictures of an alternate wing sheeting process that I have sometimes used by ironing the wing sheeting on instead of using CA.... Been awhile since I've used the iron method.... we'll see.

john josey,

BTW: I read your thread where you enlarged the Hots. I'm definitely going to put that on my to-do list. You did a great job. I have the plans for the Ultra Hots and the Big Hots that I have not built yet. Is what you did on the thread similar to those two planes?

Well guys, I got the second Hots wing in the bones this eveving. Nothing different from the first wing at this point. I just wanted everybody to know I haven't stopped working on the planes. Hopefully I'll have a picture or two tomorrow night of something different. I'm going to have a little leading edge sanding tomorrow afternoon so that may keep me from getting to the point I want to be at tomorrow night... we'll see.
Hope everyone is well. Thread is a little slow so I'm not sure how many are checking at this point. I'll pick up the picture pace again when I start the tail feathers and fuses.

Still here reading and watching. I cant think of another sports model that have so many variations to it.

As for the large Hots i built, i'm not sure how close it is to the ultra or big Hots. I just scaled it up from a 40 size Hots by 50% which gave me a full36" balsa sheet as the lenth of one wing panel. And as for construction, i just made it up as i went along, the only real shot in the dark was having to make it two piece as all the Hots i had built in the past were one piece with the hatch on the bottom.

I'm really enjoying your build though, putting me in the mood to build something myself !

Out of pocket with travel and then this week the flu. Good Grief! Interruptions just keep coming. Oh well, Finally felt like working on the other wing a little last night. Thought I would show an alternate method of sheeting for those that might be interested. You can use both Elmers wood glue or Tight Bond. I have used both but for what ever reason I like to use the Elmers when sheeting useing the heat method. May be nothing more than perception on my part but the Elmers seems to activate at a slightly,,, and I do mean slightly, lower temp so use which ever you happen to have on hand. You will see in the following pictures where I took my index finger and smeared the glue in a thin film on both surfaces to be joined.

Pic (1) In this case, the LE; the spar; and the ribs.

Pic (2) I smeared it in a thin layer on the sheet where the spar, LE, and ribs would touch. Let the surfaces air dry for about two to three hours.

Pic (3) You can see where I took my covering Iron normally set on around 3 to 4 on the dial and slowly ironed the sheeting into place. Be careful to make sure the sheeting is correctly positioned prior to heating as the glue will activate quickly. As you heat the sheeting and move the iron along the surface above the glue, imediately place your hand on the sheeting to hold it in place a few seconds and the glue will fuse as it cools. BE CAREFUL not to get over zelous and touch the iron with your hand. It will burn you,,, you don't have to aske me how I know...[:@] This method works very well for those that have an issue with the CA fumes.

This is the bottom of the wing which I built first. You can see the finished sheeting on this surface. the sheeting is very tight and simple to install. One downside you will see where I burnt the sheeting slightly. Two ways to combat this is to move the iron a little faster or turn the temp down a little. I would prefer to use a little lower temp than I did. My Mistake. I was thinking about pictures instead of paying attention to what I was doing. I have discolored the sheeting on planes before when useing this method and normally a little light finish sanding takes care of the hot spots. In fact, if I'm useing opec colors on the covering, I don't worry about sanding all the discoloration out as I cover it anyway. If you held the iron at too high a temp you could charcoal the wood all the way through which could cause a weakness. On this wing you have to be careful of temp as the sheeting is only 1/16 inch thick and really heats through quickly.

Probably won't see much out of me until after next week as the rest of the wing and aileron tasks are a repeat of earlier posts. In a couple of weeks I should start on the fuses.

Finished the second wing... Finally. Started on the tail feathers but didnt get very far. I decided to modify the plans for counter balances on the elevators. Used counter balances before but, I used the TLAR method. Thought I would mark the changes on the plans for illustration purposes. Left the camera in the shop. I hope to post a couple of pictures tomorrow night.

I've been absent from this thread for awhile. Hope everyone is doing well. Feels good to get back on some of my projects.

The balsa stripper with the 39in. channel is a Sltec that was carried by Hobby-Lobby. I went down to my shop and dug out the paperwork for mine. My stripper is about 25 years old and it is still listed by Hobby-Lobby as ''HLH 625'' http://www.hobby-lobby.com/balsa_stripper_2482_prd1.htm
I have only used mine a few times, but they sure make a job easier.

Wow guys, sorry I've been off the build for while got back on it but have been very slow. Spring here, son got married and have been involved in some other projects and work that have interfeared with the project. In fact, I haven't even been able to fly yet this year but, I'm taking a weeks vacation next week so I hope to change that.

Anyway have some pictures of the tail feather build. I have the tail done on both the planes. Started by modifying the planes a little and drew in the counterbalances.

The blade got dull in my little chopper after cutting all these sticks. Installing a new single edge razor blade. 2nd picture, I always discard the used xacto and razor blades in an old drug bottle and seal it up in order to protect the refuse workers that come through my area. I make sure and clearly mark the bottle when it comes time to throw it in the trash.

Pictures of the stab and elevators for both planes. I left the elevators skins whole for strength however, I used a Forstner bit and cut several holes in the stabs to help with the tail weight issue.
1st picture is where I had to edge glue some sheeting to get the required width on the balsa. The 2nd picture is where I cut the lightening holes. The 3rd and 4th pictures are where I glued the sheeting on the stabs. Used some old light balast for weights on the 4th one. The last picture is showing the completed stabs and elevators for both planes.

The last five pictures are showing the build on the vertical stab and rudder. I only showed one of the rudder and stab combos however, both were built at the same time.

Might be several weeks before I get back on these. I'm going to take a little time to do some finishing touches on a Super Decath I built this last fall and I hope to maiden it next week. Also, I hope to throw an Arf Pro x 260 profile together that was given to me as a gift by my wife, and fly it with a little Mintor 22 gas engine. I've never had a profile so it will be a little different for me. I plan to start the Hots Fuses in a couple of weeks.

Wishing everyone well.

Got my Pro X 260 and it's assembely thread done over on the profile threads and still waiting on some issues with the Super Decath so I'm back on the two Hot Hots models,

I tried to upload pictures of the Hots build as it continues but got the dreaded RCU 500 servor error. RCU really seems to be struggleing off and on the last year or so. I hope they can get it lined out. I don't want them to fail at this point because I really like this group and the people who post here but, I'm starting to worry that they may be on the road to ending... hope not, they have been a pretty good resource.

Anyway, I have several pictures to upload and will try again tonight.

Bill, I know you are using the RCM plan, but do you know if the MAN version is the same? I picked up a set of these since RCM seems to be defunct for the time being. Looking them over they appear to be the same. They are labeled 3D Hot Hots by Steve Santich.

Bucketobolts,

From what I can tell looking at the ad they look like they may be the same. If you'll notice, I put a couple of close up pictures of the plans on about the fourth post of this thread back on page one. I hope that helps some.
I'm traveling today but I'll try to post the pics of my current progress again tonight. Been having a little rcu server 500 error issues but, maybe they are resolve now.

Looks like the tail surfaces are larger and the wing span is shorter with a longer wing cord on the 3D Hot Hots.

In a couple days I'll be where I can measure the chord. I'll put a tape measure on the surfaces and the chord and update you with what mine show.

Balsa sticks ca'd to the sides of the fuse. Be sure and fit the formers to the balsa stick positions. If not you may find the formers don't fit after you have committed to glue. Don't ask me how I know. I knew that but, got in a hurry and forgot. I've only built this model a half dozen times. As a result, I have to cut a couple new sides. The plans make the sides slightly oversize so you can sand to fit.

Pictures of the fuse as it has been glued. I used 30 minute epoxy on the firewall and medium CA on the rest. I have not glued the rear yet as it has to have some sanding done at the tail for fit.
