alternated the nose and side applications until all layers have been laid up.

After saturated, I scrapped each layer with a playing card to squeegee excess epoxy finishing resin off.

These pics show where I trimmed the excess glass off the bottom of the mold with a hack saw, then I had sanded, used some automotive panel filler, then sanded some more. I got the filler at a local NAPA parts store. It was in a squeeze tube and is fairly easy to use, Wear a mask when sanding or grinding the cowl. I should have been wearing gloves also but failed to do that. I did have a good quality mask on though.

I wish I had taken a picture where I cut the hole in the end of the cowl but I failed to take one. I used a 1 1/2 inch hole saw on my drill press. Here is where the cowl was painted with Rustolium Gloss white out of a rattle can. the gray primer was from a rattle can also. I also trimmed out the opening for the engine to stick through as well. All the pics I have to date but I'll take some more later this week. Had to go out of town so it looks like the plane won't make the air this weekend but should the next.

Interesting, I thought I knew all the Hots models, and now today I learn of the Hot Hots. Dang, Dan was a busy man with the "hots" for his Hots ;-)
I dream of one day building a Super Hots. 60-size models seem to appeal to me, Astro Hog, 4-60, 4*60 (and If it is a 40 size, I will make it a 60 size).

Nice work! I've built several of the small 40 size profile Hots and a member at our field showed up with a glow and electric hots with this built up fuse style and now I find myself wanting to build one...preferably the big one with a gasser. anxiously awaiting your completion.
Anybody with experience or information on the big hots with a gasser please pm me.
Keep up the good work!

What is the purpose of the layer of pantyhose under the fiberglass?

Davevh and Lomcevoc,

I have plans for the Hot Hots you see here. For some reason I seem to have collected them as I also have plans the Ultra Hots, Big Hots, and even a Hots Bipe. I have never built them but I hope to some day. I think the Ultra will work well with a 55 or 60 gas, the Big Hots will work well in the 80 to 90 gas range, The Hots Bipe probably would work well with the DLE 20.
In fact Dave, I think the 60 size Super Hots will work well with a DLE 20 or Mintor 22. The Hots all build tail heavy anyway if your not careful so the gas engine might help balance rather than the dead weight of lead.

YellowBlueBird,

I learned this cowl making technique from a tutorial someone put on here on RCU years ago. Sorry, I can't remember what thread I read it in but I did my first one that way and have done it ever since. To me, the pantyhose give a base for the first layer of glass to stick easily to when you brush the epoxy in to it. In addition, I think it helps the plug to be more easily pushed out. After cutting the prop shaft hole with a hole saw in my drill press, (I cut just far enough to obtain the hole. I don't penetrate the plug very deeply as I want to reuses it if needed). I just take my thumb and push the plug out of the cowl. Also, I think it makes it easier to pull the plastic out of the cowl as it usually pulls off the plug and is in the cowl. You want to remove the plastic or engine heat will melt it getting it all over your engine and possible in the carb. It peels out of the cowl easily. The pantyhose become part of the cowl permanently.

Beautiful Building job, very professional. No Holes in the RIBS ? I like to use a modified hand Paper Punch to put "Breathing Holes in the ribs. The 3/16 dia. Punched Holes allow the hot air to pass from one Rib Bay to the next when you are using a heat gun to shrink Monokote Covering.

Keep up the good work.

Not sure how popular these were since this was a pre-brushless airplane and must have been heavy and underpowered. I know I have never seen one in person, and you rarely hear about them. I am sure if one was built today with Brushless/Lipo power, it would be awesome!
Thank you for posting those, it is a great pity Midwest stopped making airplanes.

Here is another Hots you don't seem to hear too much about (again, I have never seen a Morris plane fly):

I built but never covered mine, but it is all framed up and ready to cover. Hobby Lobby (Now Hobby Express)
blew out these kits really cheap 20 or so years ago. $25 I think I remember!
I never heard anything good about the plane as designed using the brushed can motor, but with a brushless
it should be a real performer. (That pdf is the same as the one posted at Outerzone and a scan from my kits plans)

Ken,
The hole punch is a great idea. I never thought of using in that manner but i will now. I have one out there that i use on card stock making templates. You just taught this old dog a new trick. On larger planes i hollow out the ribs. I did that on an earlier Hots once but when i weighed the wood removed i realized the weight saving was practically non existant on this size model. The inner ribs breath easy due to servo wire access. I should have posted pictures of the holes i made but didnt think about at the time as i figured all builders made some type of allowance for air flow. What i do is take a larger T-Pin and poke a couple holes in each rib between the chambers. On tail, rudder, and ailerons I make sure i poke a hole in any balsa cross brace so no chamber is sealed when covering is applied. One of the chambers will have a very small hole venting to the hinge line so all chambers can vent through one primary chamber. Do you by chance have a picture of you hole punch mod?

I never seen one fly either but i bet with a brushless setup it would fly very well. I had Don in my club and pete frankenthall also. Pete built the 40 size hots that was on the cover of the kit boxes . I built the 60 sixe hots and flew the snot out of it,very fun plane to fly and great for funfly meets .The Pizazz is a hots look alike and it was later known as the twist that hanger 9 sold and Pizazz plans are here free . joe http://my.pclink.com/~dfritzke/

Ken,

I went out and took some pictures of the other Hots wing I built as it has not been covered yet. The three pictures show how I stick a 1 3/4 T-Pin through the balsa to vent it. Also, you can see on the ailerons how I do the same thing to any cross bracing that might create a chamber.

I hadn't taken a picture of the servos hooked up in the bay since that is done on ARFS as well as builds. But decided it was worth a picture as the HOTS fuse is pretty tight. second pic is of some card stock I used to help me drill the mounting holes in the cowl over the holes in the fuse for the fasteners.

Finally, misc pictures of the finished product. The owner will paint any stripes he wants on the cowl or paint the LG. All the plane needs is engine break in and balance. It is tail heavy and I know how much weight I have to add but I didn't have the lead weights for a permanent fix. I'll do that later in the weekend after I obtain what I need to keep it under the cowl. It needs 11.75 oz of weight to balance. The plane will weigh 6.5 lbs. I would have liked it to be a little lighter but I've built several of these things and have had them this heavy or a little heavier and they flew just fine. I figured the wing loading a few minutes ago at 19 oz per sq ft.

Three more pictures of the plane. Thanks to all of you for your patience during this build. I have several planes to build this winter now that some of these other things are settling done a little. First I have a real strong itch to build a DC Gyro Copter I have some RCM plans for. I don't know a thing about them but I'm gonna give it a scratch just the same, pardon the pun.

Thanks for posting the link! I always appreciate those people that choose to share plans, rather than some of the hoarders that I have come across.

Nice! Those are some giant control surfaces. Good luck on the maiden, and let us know how it goes :-)

Great job on the build thread!
I'd love to see one done on the giant Hots.

Thanks guys for the input and compliments.
I'm going to present this model to my buddy this weekend and hopefullly he will maiden it next week. He likes to fly but doesn't build at all. He buys a lot of used planes or arfs and gets one of the other club members to help him set it up. I hope to convince him what he is missing by not learning the builders skill set.

Thought I would show the model as it looks complete and sitting in the sun light. Gave it to my buddy today and he seems happy with it. Do you think he can see it? Without going blind?
