In the process of building aUncle Willies C-130 from scratch. It hasplansbut no instructions, CAD drawings. Ithas a 65" wing span andcan be electric or gas,4 engines. Its my first build, which wasn't a smart choice on my part and unfortunitely I dont have any power tools except a dremel so all of my parts are being cut by a exacto knife.

Has anyone ever built one of these, I could use some advise.


Oh forgot to mention all balsa build, no foam but thinking fiberglass covering

Thats a pretty ambitious build, but I do hope you finish it.
You're probably going to get a lot of flak on here for even mentioning Uncle Willies. There's word of him being a pirate, and infringing copyrights. Just a heads-up.
I actually enjoy perusing his site.

I doubt he has any detailed building instructions but if you ask enough questions, I'm sure the people here can help you out with any issues you have.
I'd love to see some pics of this build, as I'm sure many others would. The C-130 is one of my favorite planes, but I'm too scared to mount more than one engine on a plane.

ok first question: it states elavator "Nyrod"  and aileron "Nyrod" route. What the heck is a Nyrod? second what kind of control setups do you guys recommend? Second: Veco type elev control assembly... whats that? sorry I'm new at this.

Nyrod was nylon tubing in a tubing similar to the Sullivan plastic pushrods material now available. It is very old. Veco horns were a wire bent in a U shape with a metal horn welded on. Usually used on the elevator but sometimes the ailerons. You can still get an equivalent from Brodak's.

Well the fuslage is coming together..... I have to buy the components for it... I'm using ca glue, bulkheads made of 1/8" balsa and1/8" lite ply. bulheads are mostly solid pieces with guides 2 on each side cut to fit 1/2" x 1/4" balsa sticks and 1 on top or bottom to fit 1/4" sq. balsa stick. bulkheads are seperate pieces for top and bottom... dunno if I like that makes glueing them difficult. I noticed I'm not a very neat cutter with an exacto knife or mini hand saw have to buy a mini scroll saw when funds are raised.

Have another question... what component makes the plane steardy? the bulkheads are basically free floating so where does it get its strength?
this will be alot easier when I can figure out how to post pictures. Im trying to post a picture of the plan as well but its in pdf form, printed out. also where is a good place to buy piano wire and what size for the landing gear? the local hobby shops out here are not much to be desired or atleast the ones I have seen on long island.

Sometimes a good mom and pop hardware store will have a wire selection.

You're going to need to sheet the fuse at least partially to give it strength

When I cut balsa or ply pieces I will always leave a little material, then use sanding blocks to finalize the part. this does not take long and does a superior job even to a scroll saw. Get yourself a couple of T-bar sanders, and not only glue sandpaper to the face but you can glue some to one side of the "upright" this way you can use it to keep your sanding at 90 degrees, especially if you are sanding stacked parts such as ribs or whatnot.

You can also get creative, glue sandpaper to a piece of pipe for inside jobs, wing fillets, etc. cut apiece of pipe in half, glue sandpaper to the inside and it is good for rounding leading edges of stabs etc. A lot of kits come with "jigs" made of light ply to sand the hing line of the control surfaces to a beveled edge, just three pieces of wood glued together. I have lost mine but maybe someone could post some plans for one.

OK now it worked. so this is what the plan looks like.... wont rotate sorry. First picture is what I'm building on.. second picture is attached to the right of plan with just required parts you need to cut out. Note anyone who might be building this. Not all the parts are on the right... No istruction book given alot of trial and error in building this. I have rebuilt the fuselage twice... best advise I can give to anyone... and take this for what it is from a new guy... build it in sections used the 1/4" ply floorings for connection points made it alittle easier. will take a pic of what I have built already when I get home.

Thank you for all the advise so far.... though I have not responded I am taking all into consideration... and is has been very helpfull. I am going to sheet certain parts to give it strength as scale said. and the t-bar sander I am trying to make one because it does sound like a good idea..

I told the wife I was gonna take a break from the c-130 to build a couple kits and her exact words were "the.... you are. This thing is a monstrocity you are not going to leave it half built in my kitchen." I have no building shop so kinda building on the kitchen table. 

Now landing gear... the plans state 5/32" du bro steerable nose gear. I searched there site and have not found a double wheel front axle. Question... could I just weld a second piece of piano wire to to the main and add a tire or does its have to be built already... something worth looking in to.

Glad to see you figured out how to post pics Tristan.

I too have done a few dinning room table builds, so I know how it is. Thank goodness I now have a room in the basement for a shop. I am sure someone here will be able to help you out with your landing gear.

Just found the 5/32" landing gear wire at a local hobby shop. now gotta figure out how to bend it. Question how do you guys mount the landing gear wire to the fuselage? the plans state nylon landing gear clamps but I haven't been able to find any. Im afraid that the landing gear will pop off during a landing and break the plane. tackling the rudder and elevator assembly later on today hopefully will get more work done soon going on vacation for 2 weeks

Looking good Tristan, I see what you mean by the fuse needing some sheeting to tie it together.

Not sure what the plans mean by nylon gear clamps, but if it is similar to what would come in a kit, it is just a strip on nylon with a couple of holes for screws, the idea being you set your gear into a hardwood hole and slot then the nylon srap just holds it so it does not fall out.

You can buy a wire bender, or just use a vice. I have no experience with working with wire, just make sure you buy extra for "practice runs" we all learn from our mistakes(or at least I do, you may get it first try)

Good to see the pictures are working for you agian, looking forward to seeing some more.

Gotta go to the local hobby shop balsa running low..... Update... Working on wing got 1/2 done gotta get aileron stock unless I can find out how to build my own. Completed most of tail assembly.. Pictures to come when I get home
