You must have the wrong address for the web site. It works fine for me just like they said on page 95 of the March issue of Model Aviation. Try [link=http://www.lonestar-balsa.com/]http://www.lonestar-balsa.com/[/link]

I noticed the posting at the bottom of the first page saying something about being TEMPORARILY CLOSED at the present time, however, that may be in response to their suppliers not being able to fill enough of their orders. They did say the supply was very tight right now. Bear with them, they seem to be trying to come back and regain their lost customers. The toll-ree phone number works, so I guess the heart is still beating, ie, they aren't closed forever.

Here is a cut and paste of what is posted on their website: Note:
LONESTAR BALSA WILL BE TEMPORARILY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. ANY ORDERS PLACED SINCE FEBRUARY 17TH WILL NOT BE SHIPPED. WE ARE VERY SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

Unfortunately we are being affected by the surge in the wind power industry. Everyone of those huge blades you see going down the highway on flatbed tractor/trailer rigs are full of balsa. Does it suck heck yes! But if it helps our country be more energy independent and means we have the electricity for things like battery charging and field lights, isn't it worth it? I live in a state known for oil and gas production but we have wind power and we support it. Even if it means my airplanes cost a little more or I have to wait a little longer for wood. My 2 cents.

Their email is also down. I tried emailing twice - both times it was returned as "undeliverable".

There has been a rumor that the manufacturers that produce wind turbines bought the balsa forests and prices/quantity are changing. The Blades on the wind turbines are made of balsa wrapped in fiberglass.

Why is it then that the other suppliers are unaffected?

They may be affected as well, just have more backstock on hand to sell than Lone Star does since the others weren't burned out and trying to rebuild

Lonestar was my local supplier, half an hour away, for many years. so I know Mike Wooten very well.

I don't believe it had anything to do with tight supplies.

As far as I know the warehouse is closed, and no communications from Mike.

I use Balsa USA as my main supplier now.

It could be he was finacially drained trying to get back up after the fire and needs time to build working capital. Anyone who has ever been through a disaster like a fire, tornado, Flood, etc. can tell you insurance never seems to cover everything. I lost a roof last year and had $2000 not covered by insurance.
