Default Motor burning out troubleshoot

I am doing a project for school in which I am building a diy rc plane. I got all of my electronics and I pieced them together to make sure they worked. And my motor worked for a little bit, and then I restarted my transmitter and tried again and the motor wires instantly started sparking up and smoke came out of the motor. Could it be that I didn’t use heat shrink tubing when soldering, or that my parts are incompatable?

Is that the wire burning in the photo? If so you definitely have a short at the motor connection.
