table saws
Looking at getting a table saw of some sort for building models. Wondering if I'd be happy with a hobby unit like the MicroMark saw or if I ought to go with a full size unit? Anyone use a smaller saw and wish they had a full size one?

RE: table saws
With a full size one you can get a thin kerf blade and do the model stuff. With a model size it's hard to run a sheet of 4x8 foot plywood through it. For cutting balsa you may be able to find a 20 thou metal slitting saw with a 5/8 hole. I'll have to look into that last bit.
But if you don't have a place that's about 20 x 8 to put the saw into the middle of then the plywood is a moot point.

RE: table saws
I have the Microlux table saw and absolutely love it. I recommend it without reservation. The blade that comes with it is crap though. Get the carbide blade and one of the thinner blades.
Also, the micro-adjust fence is worth its weight in gold. It is not included and is an additional purchase.

RE: table saws
Are you looking for an actual table saw? Correct me if I'm wrong but table saws are just for straight cuts.... Is that what you want to do?
I just bought a 16" scroll saw and love it....great for bulkheads, ribs, and other curved parts....you can make inside cuts with it too.
Won't cut as straight as a table saw but much more versatile in my opinion. Depends on your needs.....

RE: table saws
I do already have a scroll saw and a bench sander. Very useful for cutting ribs, etc.
But I had stumbled onto Cafeen Man's website at www.airfieldmodels.com (very nice website by the way) and saw the MicroMark saw he uses and realized there were a lot of places where a table saw of some sort would make my building much better. I could fit a full size unit in my garage model workshop, but I don't see myself needing to ever run full-size lumber through one, just balsa, etc. and the smaller saws take up so much less space.
I guess I just want to make sure that in the context of building RC models, I won't ever wish I had a bigger saw. Any thoughts?
Thanks all...

I do not have room for a larger saw or I would certainly consider buying one in addition to the Microlux, but not instead of. I can't see putting the small sizes of wood I use through a full size saw.
Hope this helps.

RE: table saws
A good full-size saw will enable you to rip clear dimentional lumber into CHEAP spars and such...A hickory plank will yield a bunch of spars that will have you throwing your spruce into the trash. PS- stay away from radial arm saws for ripping.
