Wood Density Question(s)
I am using Solidworks 3D CAD to design a plane. The design is pretty complete at this point and I'd like to figure out the weight and CG. Solidworks can give me that at the click of a button but I need to enter the materials properties for the parts.
To keep things reasonably simple, I just need the densities of just a few wood types.
1. Sheet Balsa (ribs and skin)
2. Stick Balsa (leading, trailing edges)
3. Birch Ply (formers)
4. Stick Basswood (struts and braces)
I went to Superior Balsa's website and they show the light to medium grade as 6-8 lbs/cuft. I think I should use a density of 8 lbs/cuft for the sheet balsa.
If anyone has the density values for the other woods and any other tips and suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
