horizontal stab size
Can any body tell me if the is a 'rule of thumb' in regards to horizontal stab area versus wing area.
I am designing a turbine powered twin boom sport jet type aircraft.
Wing span is 2289mm,450mm at the root,350mm at the tip.
I am having trouble settling on a dimension for the horizontal stab.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

horizontal stab size
It really depends on surface area of the wing and the tail moment. 10 to 35%. If you have a shorter tail moment (<1 x MAC or less), the stab is less effective, so the sa has to be greater. Longer moments(>2.75 X MAC can be much smaller). High aspect ratio's are much more effective than low AR for the same area of stab, and require less servo torque for the same SA. There is a whole lot more to it than this, but should be a start. -------- Ah, I was looking for a spreadsheet that I found some time ago, don't know where it came from, I don't take any credit for the calculations, or any liability. I have since made it accurate and much more useful. But here's the original, w/o modifications. It's a starting point.

Horizontal Tail Area
There are several considerations in determining horizontal tail area.
There is the matter of pitch oscillation damping. The pitch damping goes up as the horizontal tail area and as the square of the tail moment arm.
There is the matter of pitch control authority. It is proportional to horizontal tail area, tail moment arm and horizontal tail span.
As a rough comparison, you can calculate the horizontal tail volume coefficient for a plane whose handling qualities you like and then use the same tail volume coefficient for your design. The horizontal tail volume coefficient is the horizontal tail area (expressed as a percentage of the wing area) times the tail moment arm (expressed as multiples of the mean aerodynamic chord [MAC] of the wing). The tail moment arm is measured from 25% of the MAC of the wing to 25% of the MAC of the horizontal tail.
The cleaner the fuselage and wing wake the less airflow over the tail will be slowed by turbulence and the more effective the tail area.
