Curtiss Jenny plans?
Does anyone know of a source for plans for a semi scale Curtiss Jenny? I'm thinking of something in the range of 65-72 inch wingspan. Thanks

I'm sure they do. Just send an e-mail or call. Some kit plans don't have patterns for all the parts though, so that might be a problem.

The new Cleveland plans are nice and clear now.

Trouble is you'll probably get enlarged rubber free flight plans, but they are adaptable to RC with some work
Also Flying Scale Models out of England did a feature on the JN a few months ago

RE: Curtiss Jenny plans?
The Oct. 1974 issue of Flying Models had a really nice 36" Jenny in it. The author/designer was Hurst Bowers and the plan number is CF-346. It's layed out for free flight or a 3 ch with an .020.
I've always been partial to this design since it's stick and tissue constructed and appears quite scale. One could upsize the design to 72" with some structural mods.
Good luck,
Erik

My catalog is a few years old but at the time they sold the plans for all of their planes. If the Jenny is like the WWI planes that I have built (Fokker DrI and Nieuport 28) the kit is a worthwhile consideration. These are builders kits that duplicate original construction as much as possible. There are relatively few diecut parts (ribs and a few plywood pieces) the wood and hardware packages are the best I have ever seen.

Pete,
Carstens plans CD024 (www.flyingmodels.com page3 on the list). 72" span, semi scale. Might be the same plan that Kitfoxkid has.

The Carstens plans (CD024) are my design, I wrote the article back in 1997. I'm still flying the original, it's a nice flier.
Looking back at the plans, I would guess that it's a little overbuilt; but mine is holding up, and it carries the weight easily. I've seen quite a few built for electric power, it's a good battery-carrier. Also one scaled up 200% - 12 foot span!
If anyone ends up building from my plans, feel free to write me if you have any questions about the plans or the plane.
Clear Skies,
David Fielding

I would like the plans as well if you're still offering. Thank you, it's a great design.
Thanks for coming up with the plans in the first place. Where do you thiink it's overbuilt? Thanks!!!

The plans are available from Flying Models, #CD024. The link in an earlier post is incorrect, it's:
[link=http://www.flying-models.com/]Flying Models[/link]
Just click on "Plans Directory". They can also include a reprint of the construction article, still my first and only published design! I would love to do another, just too many hobbies, and a full-scale antique plane to look after now.
I think the "overbuilt" areas are the double 1/4" spruce wing spars and the forward fuselage. It's not much of a weight penalty, since mine still came out under 5 pounds (with over 1100 sq. in. of wing area!) but every little bit helps. I guess you can never have too strong of a wing - I've looped my Jenny hundreds of times - but I suspect that a lighter wing would be possible, either with all balsa spars or smaller (3/16?) wood.
Anyway, the interplane struts are for alignment only; the wings are plenty strong enough by themselves, Fokker-style. Choose light wood and build off the plans, it'll fly!
