Any of the nasty stuff like: laquer thinner, "Goof Off", etc.
Sometimes, I can spray my template with a very light coat and let dry a little. There's enough tack to stick but not transfer so much that it needs cleaning.

Next time you might try a removeable adhesive spray sold in art supply stores.

Mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, acetone, mek, xylene, etc. About anything that will cut oil base paint will work.

3M has a remover for their 77 line of adheasives. It is used in the auto industry for removing wood grain tapes, such like station wagons used to have. It works on painted surfaces also.

It is still available at auto restoration places, auto body and paint suppliers and a few auto part stores. It is rather pricey at about $10 per aerosol can.

I use the citrus based Goo Gone, sold in various places but I know in the paint department of Home Depot.

Regular ol' Lighter fluid! (You know... the Ronson stuff in the Yellow squeeze bottle).

Here's a Pro-Tip:

Instead of peeling the paper template off and then cleaning-up the residual glue, simply wipe (or squirt for large parts) the lighter fluid over the part and paper template. Wait a few seconds for the fluid to soak-in and slide the template off the wood. A lighter fluid dampened paper towl will remove any residual glue (if any). The lighter fluid evaporates extremely quickly and leaves the wood ready to use.

This method saves you the frustration of trying to "Pick" the tattered remains of the template off the wood when the template doesn't come off in one piece.

Hope this helps!

Craig

Craig - When using spray glue for patterns, just spray the pattern and let it dry for a few minutes. Rub it down. When you're done it will peel right off without using any kind of solvent. If you want a more permanent bond, then spray both pieces, wait for them to get tacky and then put them together. That's how I make my sanding blocks, and I use a heat gun to peal them back apart.
