Two New Giant Foamie Ryobi Designs
Hi all,
I my quiet time this last weekend I drew up two new designs around the Ryobi 31cc conversion.
The first is going to be an experiment in Bird conrol at our local aerodrome.
Feeding on the innate fear that many birds have for birds of prey (raptors) I desinged the Ryobi-Falcon:
http://www.crazyherb.com/falcon.jpg
Menacing enough ya think???
Then, after the sucess of my original white foam 86 inch Giant Delta I've done up one for the Ryobi as well from 1.5 inch Foamular 250 (Pink Foam)
http://www.crazyherb.com/NEWGIANTDELTA.jpg
This one has a full 8ft 96 inch span and a semi-profile fuse much like an aerobatic plane...hold on to your shorts!!!
My construction methods will be just as I did with Big Pink and PLANK. You can see construction pics and a few comments on my web site:
www.crazyherb.com
If anyone is interested I can export in serveral formats, including CAD based. Let me know if you want a copy.
Also...feel free to post comments and your thoughts.....
Enjoy!

RE: Two New Giant Foamie Ryobi Designs
Cool
I have two Ryobi's waiting for a home. Someday I'll get to that P-38........
For now, this sounds like a great way to break them in. The hard part will be getting the foam. Here in the south they dont stock foam thicker than 3/4" in the home stores. There is a fome supplier that willcut what you need, I'll have to go find them.
Send me the plans for the delta. WIth that big rudder it aught to do some wild stuff.
What about landing gear for this thing? Hmmm I have a pair of retracts lying around.......
Herb, guess I'm as crazy as you.
Scott.

Hi Cherb,
Unfortunately, while your thinking is logical on the bird or prey thing, it doesn't think like a bird. I've been hazing for the last two years and developed techniques to Run The Little Beggars off. What we found is that a bird that is on the ground, in the water, roosting, will not be provoked by a model airplane unless it is first provoke to fly by other means. They'll just score your loops and rolls over them clapping their little bird wings in applause. Bird Blaster, Screamers or Cannons are the best way to entice them to take wing. Ounce in flight it really doesn't matter what model is used to redirect there flight. We did find that a Hobbico Trainer worked best. So,
First get them in the air
Second, you need to match there speed or a little slower and move up behind and below them. Try to just herd them by flying on the opposite side you wish them to turn. With a little practice you will find they will respond to your commands.
Now, remember, hazing birds in some states is prohibited and you can find yourself in big trouble. Also, there are only three birds in the USA that are not on the endangered species list, SO, what ever you do DON'T hurt them or inflect harm in anyway or you will have ever squirrel hugger hunting you down like a dog ( taken from experience )
Have fun

I'd like to think we raised the little devil's repitoire of flight play somewhat. It sure was a hoot to see from our perspective.

RE: Two New Giant Foamie Ryobi Designs
There actually amazing little animals. I had to go to a crash course in bird school last year and learned more than I ever wanted to know about birds. It's unfortunate that most of use take them for granted as we always see them in mass numbers across the world everyday. I was in Cliffton, AZ several years ago and watched them having more fun on the slopes than we as modelers do.

RE: Two New Giant Foamie Ryobi Designs
So, the comment "Bird Brain" is more of an insult to birds?
Starcad, awesome information...I knew SOMEONE had done this before....
I think they're currently using ground burst simulators to scare them up....but they come back...
So, maybe we could "augment" their efforts..... Once they're airborne herd them off ...
I definitely agree, and want to keep the "Environmentally Friendly" thing too... I've read on a few of the programs out there and it's quite the delicate balance of enough "effect" to get the job done without abusing or harming the little guys...
Thanks for the info....

Several more things I should suggest Herb. The birds will get used to what ever noise is spooking them, so you have to use different approaches to scare them. Also you must constantly move the noise after several days in one place or they will just come right back to where they were. We have had them site on one of the cannons that hadn't been moved in several days and just stand on it as it went off. Try, if possible, to eleminate natural food and bedding areas. Timing is another part. Try not to spook them at the same time everyday but vary the time along with the times in between.
Using the trainer we were able to show down enough to get below and behind them and again just herd them off.
Now the bad part. A lot of the time these birds have been flying all night ( Migration takes place at night between the hours of 7 to 10 pm and 4 or 5 am and when it's time to land and rest that is just what they are going to do. By the time they hit the ground - water they're almost dead and have spent a great deal of energy. Nothing you do will get them in the air. Sometimes you will have to wait several hours before they recover enough to haze them from your area. So you have to be gentle with them or you will end up with a dead bird and hiding from the game warden
Hope you have as good success as we did, no dead birds in two years of the project.

Were just a hop skip and jump from the gulf of California at the mine I was working at. Everything from ducks to pellicans and every other type of water foul in the book. Fun job and a great gig for the ( bonus) bucks I was making.

Not a problem FoamCut...
What format would you like?
.jpg, .dwg, .dxf??
Or shall I say....what program are you using to view/print the file.
If you search/read the Giant Delta thread in this forum there's a guy that did retractable tri-gear....looked awesome.
I don't know what size retracts I'd use to get the 18 inch prop clearence though...hehe...

RE: Two New Giant Foamie Ryobi Designs
some observations from my experience as a greenskeeper at a golf couse:: we use the following methods to control damage by the resident canada goose population:
rc aircraft and boats
herding dogs(border collies and austrailian sheperds)
bird bombs
fall hunting
foam/rubber predator fakies (coyotes and foxes)
none of these things by themselves work very well, the geese quickly become used to any one used singly. I have seen geese lying in the shade provided by the fake predators! the fakes must be moved several times a day to be effective, and like the previous post i agree that planes dont work unless the birds are airborne.I currently use a homebrew foamie flying wing (54 in span, brushless motor, li-poly battery pack) as well as some cheap rtr boats in cocert with the rest.
