CG Question: Which adds more weight to nose - move wing forward or back?
I've scratch built a 84" WS profile GeeBee R1. I flew it for the first time yesterday. It flies like a dream, but I had to add much weight up front. It weighs 17lbs dry. I've had to add almost a pound of weight upfront. The way it is built, I could easily move the wing forward or backward an inch or two. I'd like to move the wing so I can take the weight out of the nose.
Which way should I move the wing to add weight on the nose-side of the CG?
Thanks for the help.
David

RE: CG Question: Which adds more weight to nose - move wing forward or back?
Right. It is the pressure of the moving air under the wing which bears the weight of the whole plane in the air. The desired CG is a point along the chord of the wing, at or slightly ahead of the geometric center of pressure. Moving the wing back will move the center of pressure back, and desired CG back along with it, allowing weight to come out of the nose and still balance at the desired point on the wing. Judging from similar adjustments I've made, I don't know that one inch backwards would compensate for a full 16 oz in the nose, but it will make a big difference.
