BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
In the July 07 issue of FLY RC the pull out glow plan was titled Blue Flash. I couldn't find another post on this plan so here's what I have done so far. Just working a little each night.

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
Looking forward to the thread ... I've had the plan printed and wood purchased for about a year now. Never had the time/gumption to get it started. I keep telling myself ... soon Maybe this is just the thread to get me going. Are you going to do a comprehensive build thread or more of a progress here and there? Either is great ... I love to see how others build.

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
So far i have had to purchase 1 more 12" x 1/4" 48" long balsa, and 1/4" dowel rod. (I had nothing in my personnal stock of wood)
The plans don't show clearance on the rudder for the middle of the elevator. You can see in the pic what I did.

Glowflite,
Your build looks good. I am interested in watching your progess. I have these plans from the same issue. I had them blown up to a 58" wingspan. I haven't built them yet. I am not real happy about the flat wing ribs (Vs. symetrical). What do you think? Will this fly well in the wind? Will it gain altitude every time you throttle up like a trainer?
Thank you

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
This is a scratch build, so you have choices. You can modify any part of the plan you want. Flying in the wind I think is an experience thing. I have a flat bottom wing for an spad stick that is my best flyer in the wind. I can tell you that if you plan to use standard servos the ribs could use about 3/16" more height to allow clearence. I'm not sure about gaining altitude when you throttle up I belive that is a engine thrust issue. Too much down or not enough down thrust? Not sure. 58" will be nice. I am looking forward to a smaller size, I like to take a few planes to the field with me when I go. Here are a few more pics after servos centered and controll arms on. I want be able to get to these after the covering is applied. center one for flaps and the outer ones for flaperons/ airbrakes. I plan on useing a Tower .40 so I hope this plan is fast with the ability to crawl.
I am really injoying this sratch build. It is my first with balsa wood (made a few spads, and have built a few kits). My only beef so far is that it's starting to be cheaper to purchase an RTF than to build this plane. Something is not right about that.

Glowflite,
I appreciate your time. I am just trying to weight and address issues before time and money is spent. Thanks.
I like your build. Please keep the pictures coming.
Good luck
Frank

Looking good - thanks again for sharing. A couple of questions for you. If memory serves me there are a couple of places where the author used blue foam and fiberglass, are you doing the same? Also, I think he glassed and painted the fuse and used Mono/Ultra cote to cover the wings, what method of covering are you using? Finally, are you going with a pilot figure? What color scheme are you going with?

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
Just about ready to cover wing.
Flaps, Alerions are the same size.
Ca hinges used so if the alerions are too small i can remove easy.
Most likely build a glass cowl, will see how that goes. The covering will all be mono coat and paint. This plane for me is not intended to be a master peice just a small different plane I can show off at the field, with haveing a blast flying it. With putting a .40 on the front i don't want to add any more weight than needed. I will have a pilot ( possibly Anniken from Star Wars) My kids have one floaten around some where.
I am really thimking about useing the old normal color scheme, I may try painting on top of the mono for the stripes etc....
Here are some more pictures the wing is all most ready for final sand and cover. Can't wait!!!!!!!

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
A little more progress, the wig is covered, not any trimming yet. Started to cut the formers for the fusealoge. It appears it's going to be a little smaller than I thought I may be dropping my engine size just a little. .35 maybe, will have to see how it balances out near the end.
May try spray painting (rustoluem??) on the trimmings, any advice with that please share with me. Also I think I will need to spray a clear coat to help protect from fuel???
All is going together very quickly, I haven't keeped up with my time so far but am haveing a blast with this project!!

Glowflite,
Looks great! I've actually set aside those plans and picked up the wood to do this build about a year ago. Haven't gotten around to it yet. It might become my simple winter project. Looks like you're doing a great build!! I look forward to hearing how she flies!

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
Hi all,
This looks like a fun project and inspired me to order the Fly RC edition. I need a project for the winter and this looks like a good one. This will be my second scratch build. The first was earlier this year and was the 'Scratch' that was in the May 2008 Fly RC. I actually have built two Scratches so that I can experiment with different electric setups and a wing without dihedral; just finished the second and will be flying more this weeked.
I see that the Blue Flash is gas/nitro and I have only dealt with electric. I assume an electric conversion should not be too much of a problem. A large plane sounds interesting so I may increase the size of the plans.
Anyway, keep posting the great photos!
thanks
John.

Here are some more pictures, frameing the fuse and starteing to mount radio gear. Getting closer to the final goal. The material list is working okay so far. Had to shorten f2 to match f1 and f3 top curve. Not a big issue. Its about time for me to pick up the gear, engine mount, push rods. I'm useing older servos i already have, JR, Futaba, Tower Pro. With a HiTec receiver. All will be guided by a 7cap futaba radio

GlowFlite,
Looking very good! I fly off grass and the 3" wheels would be my choice as well. I would appreciate hearing about your flight report on your maiden flight. Especially how the flaps worked out for you.
Thanks
Frank

Glowflite ... what type of gear did you use for the project? Did you pick these up from the LHS or online, just looking to gather components for mine and wondering which specific gear you went with...
Thanks!

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
The wheels are Hanger 9 Pro-light 3". $6.69
The gear is Great Planes .40 size. $7.99 (I think Dural, the package has hit the trash but on my receite the Iten # is GPMQ1820)
Great planes 5/32 bolt on axels. $3.99
The pilot is a Tony 1:6 Scale (may be painting different glasses and adding a go-tee)
Yes all from hobby shop in town.
Most every other plane I see, and in my hanger have Du-Bro. I really like the appeal of these rollers.
Here are a few more pictures of the tail section on each side of the rudder, just getting started.

RE: BLUE FLASH FLY RC Mag #44
Nice project GlowFlite. Appears you are getting MUCH more from this build than dollar value, eh? Hard to put a "price" on the fun factor when you scratch/plan build your own...and just wait until this model breaks ground and takes flight after starting out as pieces YOU prepared. Therein will be the real payoff!
Soft landings.
