Default RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon

Bernard,

I am one of those who would like to scale the plans down. I'm looking for a wingspan in the 30"-36" range, preferably closer to 30". I understand the scaling problem and I'm not sure what the relationship between metric sizes of wood and "standard" sizes of wood. All the stuff I see at my hobby shop is 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, etc.

1/64" = .4 mm
1/32" = .8 mm
1/16" = 1.6 mm
1/8" = 3.2 mm
1/4" = 6.4 mm

My plan is to scale the laser cut part sheet you include with the plan and cut the slots on the formers to the size of the strings and size the spars and LE and TE apropriately.

It would be nice to have a 50% copy of the pdf files just for reference and layout of the wings, especially the upper wing.

Looking at those laser cut sheets does make me dread the hand cutting of all those parts....
They look really nice!

I notice something that looks different from the laser sheet you sent me and the ones you show in the picture.
In the laser cut sheet you sent me the two piece sides have a jagged joint, but it looks like the pieces cut on the last photo you put up have tabbed joints.

Tried uploading a couple pictures showing what I mean about the tabbed and jagged joints on the fuse sides but it seems there is a problem with the rcuniverse web server right now.

Mike,

when I have some time this weekend, I will send you a 50% copy of the plans.

As mentioned earlier, there were quite a few modifications of the parts on the cut sheets to allow better part fitting and to correct some issues. Some missing parts were added and some other parts were added to match the required quantity/parts.

The fuse sides were 'sectioned' (3 sections instead of 2 on previous versions) to accommodate with the size limitation of the laser cut machine.

The picture in the previous reply is just one of the prototype. The final version will contain even more parts.

Keep in mind that when the full size kit is ready. It is extremely easy to scale down the laser cut to 50%. Only the material list would change. A nice 50% laser kit or a long manual labor: it's your decision

Cheers,
Bernard

Thanks Bernard!

I'll have to see what it costs to get it laser cut. Otherwise, I'll be using a #11 blade .

The plans look great.

Thanks again,
Mike

How is everyone printing out your plans?

I can not get Acroread to print the whole thing out. It only prints one page.

Thanks,

Mike,

I can prepare a pdf version that will print on several pages. What is the maximum paper size for your printer ?

Hi bbt,

You have mentioned the possibility of offering a 50% laser kit.
How about a kit in 80% size to match the engine size to a 90-size glow engine?

Best regards
Finn

I'm printing it out on an ink jet printer. US letter is the size I'll be using.

Don't know why it won't tile it?

Thanks again,

Just FYI - I received this email about this kit - it appears bbt is teaming up to have short and long kits produced somewhere other than Lazerlizard - the comany that is doing the kits and prototyping it sent me this:

I am waiting to hear back from him if the kits will include a cowl and canopy - if I hear back, I'll add it to this post.

If not - it seems to me that the monster Pitts is really just a biplane version of the Yak-54 - I'm wondering if there is a particular kit out there that has the cowl and canopy that would work for these plans?

W4MWK,

We are still working to iron out a couple of updates before moving forward with production on the laser cut kit. Already, we have identified several issues and omissions from the initial release that have now been corrected. I would like to begin taking orders by the end of next week, so please keep an eye on the website. Any official announcement on availability will be made here and will be emailed to the interest list linked above. I will post any new pictures as they become available on the website.

Thanks.

I do have a question about this plane - the 68"ish span puts this plane at similar size with the GP Pitts and Christen Eagle right?

Neither of those planes have airfoiled tail sections, and from the plans posted earlier, neither will this kit - but is there a major advantage to having airfoiled tailplanes for a model this size?

Most BLUEPRINTING shops can print them out. I took a CD with my downloaded plans on it to Everett Washington's "Bills Blueprinting" and got a beautiful set of plans in less than an hour. All they had to do was eliminate some of the boarder area around the plan and it printed out great. I was very impressed with how much detail BBT put on the plans, including line drawings giving the shape of the cockpit canopy. BTW, BBT, is there any more news on the lazer cut kits?

Hello Everyone.

The plans for the Spirit of Pitts are available by request through the form found at the link "Request the plans from Bernard Burton", which can be found at [link=http://www.gundersonaerodesign.com/products.htm]www.gundersonaerodesign.com/products.htm[/link].

Much progress has been made on the short kit, and we are entering the home stretch before releasing the laser cut kit. Changes have been made both for fit, and for improved structural integrity. And the final product is a very nice kit (although I am biased). I am hoping to begin taking orders soon for the short kits with shipments starting in mid-November. I will announce when orders are being taken on this forum, and in an email sent to all members of the interest list ([link=http://www.gundersonaerodesign.com/interestform.htm]www.gundersonaerodesign.com/interestform.htm[/link]). Please stay tuned as information will be coming this week on price, and specifics on dates.

The full wood kit, and a version that includes a canopy and cowling are also in the works.

Thanks.

If I remember right, the paper is 36" wide by whatever the length was. To fit on the 36" paper, the extra border needs to be removed almost all the way to the border line

Hi Again
Sorry to be such a pain but I just got back from trying to get my plans printed and was told by two print shops that there size is 66"x 90" and that they can't print them
I would be more than willing to pay the cost of printing, shipping and some for time and gas, if some one has a place that they can get them printed for me.
Thank you.

Okay, I just dug my set out and found that my set was printed in two pieces, one 36" wide, the other 24" wide. Are you telling me that a print shop can't block the plans onto two sheets? I'll unroll mine later and get back to you, unless Bernard has no objections to me copying my set and sending the copy to you. Can't do it till Friday either way, just so you know

The one shop did print it out on 42 pieces of 11x17 paper each (Fuse and Wing) but when I got them home I noticed that they have a 1\2" border that would hvae to be trimmed. I would have to trim two sides of each piece and tape them together. I don't think that doing this would make for accurate or durable set of plans.
Thanks

Why in the world did they do it that way? There is no way to be sure you are lining all those pages up straight. I unrolled my set this morning and have a simple way for you to get your plans printed:
Fuselage Page Have a shop print out the bottom half on 36" wide paper, then do the same with the top half. IF the side view is not completely on the bottom half , have them print out the center section on 24" paper, starting at 18" from the bottom border line. This will give you complete prints of all the layouts, as well as the frames, on one sheet each.
Wing Page Have the shop do the 36" paper from the top and from the bottom. This will give you about a 5 to 6" overlap in the middle, between the upper and lower wings, where it won't matter anyway.
A good blueprint shop will be able to do this. Bill's ran my fuselage page on three 24" wide sheets with a 3" top and 5" bottom overlaps. The only problem is the right horizontal stab and the landing gear layouts got cut off, which is why I recommend the 36" paper for your plans.
