You're kidding right? I've been building models since 1968 and have never heard of anyone covering a model with brown paper and carpender's glue. I would strongly recommend against that covering, unless you just want to add a whole lot of weight. Remember, the lighter the plane, the better it will fly. You lightest covering would be one of the iron-on films like MonoKote. If you're not comfortable with iron-ons, I'd stick with the tried and true dope and tissue. I bet you could keep the weight under 3 pounds. My IL2 Stromovik has the same engine, 3 micro servos, a micro-mini servo for the throttle and a 250mAh battery pack; and weighs 2 lb., 13 oz.

i most deffinately am not kidding!!,this method has been used for years over here and is surprisingly light with the advantage of adding strength too.ive seen a few threads about this covering and also a good article in rcme may 2005 a guy built and covered a foam hurricane simillar size to mine.i realise balsa is heavier than foam but i dont think this covering will add that much weight.obviously you water down the glue 50% water to glue.
you didnt answer my question about the engine?.hows she look in the pic ?,ive since sanded her to shape a bit more and shes looking good for a 1st scratch build i think?.

Wow, learn somethin' new every day. That GP.10 is a great little engine. Once you get the carb adjusted right, it has a nice idle and good throttle response. My Stormovik can do just about every stunt in the book and yet still has a nice slow landing speed.

cool sounds like i got one thing right then?,i see where your coming from about the covering though but im tempted to try the brown paper just to see how it turns out!!.so do you think the engine will be ok with the added weight?.oh i paid £26 for the engine with silencer second hand on ebay but the engine and silencer are unused!!.i havent got it yet but should have it in a week as the guys gone away for a few days.

Paper & glue works over foam to add rigidity like a poor man's fiberglass, but since it doesn't shrink, You'll get sags between ribs and have a mess to remove. And since it won't shrink, you'll lose the compresion loading and attendant airframe strength film gives. This will seriously compromise the strength of the airframe. Don't cheap out now, Lighter flies better, and the best bang for the buck will be iron-on film. I really like easy-coat low temp stuff, and it's made in Germany, so maybe it's easier to get there than here. BTW, if that .10 causes nose heavy or clearance problems, get a Norvel .074...Super light & compact with more power than a .10.

well the airframe and wings are covered in balsa sheeting so there wont be any sag!!.pluss from what ive read it certainly does shrink, the trick is to absolutely soak the paper 1st.ie in the bath so it expands slightly.ill stand to be corrected but thats what ive read in the reviews!!.then after its dried you sand it smooth and paint it!!.thanks for the input though and you may yet prove to be right as im only going by what ive seen and read about this method.how much does the gp 10 thunder tiger weigh out of interest?.

Acording to the Manufacturer, the GP-10 weighs 162g/5.71oz but they don't say if that includes the muffler.

I'd start with a 7 X 3. If you can find one, a 7 X 3.5 Cox would be choice.

I'ts getting there. Here comes the tedious part of the build, the sanding and filling and sanding and filling and sanding and filling ....
Is the "canopy" a solid piece of balsa? If it is, I would recommend hollowing it out as much as possible. You might want to cut some lightening holes in the tail feathers too. The lighter the better, without sacrificing strength. I usd to know a racecar builder who once told me the best way to remove a 100 pounds from a car is to find 1600 places to remove 1 ounce.

I usually set mine up at 0-0, that's what trim tabs are for. After a couple of flights, you may want to add some shims or washers between the motor mount and fiewall. Depends on how much trim you have to use.

I have three House of Balsa p51s with 30 engines, two with 30 enya two strokes and one with a Magnum 30 4stroke. Each weighs just under three pounds and fly great. The enyas fly fast,a little over 90 mph but the 4 stroke is much more fun.By moving the firewall back and mounting servos in the tail I was able to keep the same overall weight as the two strokes.I enjoy building and thought this would be something of a challenge. I am glad to see someone else still likes the smaller planes. Most of my club has gone to 3d and larger than 60 size planes.
I also have a Birdie 10 with a 15 enya that flies as well as the big ones.

Well done! Scratch building is what it's all about. Any one can build an ARF, and most people can build a kit; but only a few of us can scratch build. Let us know how she flies.

Hi,

I have made over 15 fighters in that size range.

The weights of mine range from 2.6 to 3.75 lbs, depending on what I cram into the fuselage.

For power, I've used everything from an 0S .20 FP to a .40 four stroke for glow, and from 160 to 655 W for electric.

This being said, if your ready to fly weight is under 2 lbs, a .10 or 15 will do you fine. 2-3 lbs, .15 to .25 (32 if at 3500+ FT ASL, and plane weigh 3+ lbs..

If your plane likes to "snap roll" on landing approach, raise both ailerons 1/16" or so. On a tapered wing, this effectively increases the wash-out. I, personally, don't feel that this trait is a "given" on small Warbirds, and use an airfoil/washout combination that doesn't do that. Having spent 2 years testing it back in the mid 90's helped......

Laddie Mikulasko regularly covers with the brown paper method. He is famous for building light airplanes.

Sorry I didn't find this thread earlier.

I hope this helps.

Ron Daniels
