Neat airplane design
This is a variation on the Blue Angel formation designed by Ken Willard. The memory is a little fuzzy but I think it came out in a Model Aviation back in the early 70's. The original used a Max 10 I believe and had no landing gear. The overall span being about 45'ish inches.

I saw Ken Willard flying his Blue Angels airplane when I was a kid (around 10). As you said, it was in the '70s. I don't have any details, but have some vague memories of it flying at the Flying Lady Restaurant in Morgan Hill (San Jose).
BTW, the real Blue Angels are in town (SF Bay Area) this weekend for Fleet Week. Its a nice demo because they fly around Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge. Quite a bit different than being at an NAS or AFB.
