Default Just a small easy build CAD project.

Here's a plane that my buddy Cal and i will be building as a first winter project. We bought plans for a small plane called the Philcan Sedan that we both thought was a neat looking but sort of an odd little duckling meant for an economical 20-26 four stroke but i will be mounting a Magnum 30. I found things that i wanted to change after looking at the plans, so i measured and redrew and redesigned the plane with TurboCAD with all the modifications that i wanted.( a few are: it had to go on floats and be able to be built as either the original open cockpit version or with an enclosed cockpit and i wanted the wing to bolt on instead of being strapped on with elastics ).
Here's a pic of the plans. We now have recieved the printed plans from Universal Reproductions in Kamloops and the laser cut parts from AK Models. As usual the printing and laser cutting were top notch.

Construction has started! I've started with the tail feathers because i still need to order some stick and sheet stock for the wing and fuse.

Default RE: Just a small easy build CAD project.

I found some wood in my wood box that allowed me to do some more building.
I also laminated some parts together that needed to be laminated together and the wing saddle doublers were laminated in their position on the 1/32" ply side doublers.
The inner fuselage forward structure was built. The one change i made was using 3/8" sq spruce for the engine mount beams instead of 3/8 x 1/2. Then i cut a 1/8" ply plate that was glued to the tops of the beams that the engine will sit on. This wasn't on the plans but i rarely end up building a plane as per the plans (even ones i drew up). The plate was cut with tabs that filled in the 1/8" space that was left because of the smaller beams. I also used the ply doubler sides to make sure that the instrument panel was glued in the right spot to the floor. These weren't glued to the structure though. Only after they are laminated to the balsa sides will they then be glued to the front structure.
The cockpit cabin structure was also glued together which will be left separate and be detachable form the rest of the fuse so i can change to an open cockpit if i want.

I always enjoy watching projects like this develop. Your designs are always different, never boring and I always learn something from them. Keep it coming.

Actually this isn't completely my design, it's based on Philip Kents Philcan Sedan.

The balsa sides and ply doublers were laminated together. I used small pieces of fiberglass on the insides of the balsa sides where the front and back sides pieces are glued together, (the limatations of a 24" laser cutter) sometimes you have to glue smaller pieces together to make a bigger piece. Then the sides were glued to the forward structure with epoxy. The other ply pieces like the wing mount, LC plates, and rear formers were then glued in. I had the laser mark the sides where the formers are located. Isn't laser cutting great
The one photo with the cabin and tail sitting in place give an idea of what it will look like.

After waiting a week to get my wood in the mail here's some update shots. Wing is starting to take shape. The building of the fuse is pretty much done.
I can see a twin engine flying boat based on this plane in the future.

Here's some pics of the wing being built. The sheeting and capstrips will be next.

Progress update. The wing is almost done except for the wing tips and aileron hinges. I added a 1/2" strip to the edge of the rudder to make it bigger. It seemed a bit on the small side for flying on floats, making it bigger won't hury anything anyways. I might make rounded wing tips for it like a cub has to increase the wing area a little for float flying.

I took a long break from building this plane to do other things but now i am back at it to get it ready for the flying season.
The floats have been built and are made from foam cores sheeted with 1/16" balsa, the balsa sheet was glued to the foam with Aleenes quick drying Tacky glue. The gear legs were bent from 1/8" music wire with 1/16 inch music wire cross braces.
I also added 1 1/2" wide balsa wing tip blocks.
The building and finish sanding is now done. On order is some Hangar Nine ultra cote to cover this bird.

Here's some shots of the plane almost done. I cut the cockpit roof off to make it the open cockpit version instead and covered it with Hanger 9 Ultra Cote in red and silver. My old open rocker Saito 30 MK1 will provide the power instead of my Magnum 30 that was originally planed to pull it around. The Saito really looks good in the nose and suits the old time look of the plane with those open rockers. All servos will be Hitec HS-81's.

Canadagoose, I like the looks of your design but I couldn't download and view your drawings without some kind of DWF Viewer. What is that?

Hello, i downloaded your plans, but autoCAD only open the DWG cut file. There are two DWF files, and can't open them. It's to possible you give me the DWG or DXF files.

Thanks
