Default Kadet senior plus 45%

Thinking about building a kadet senior and enlarging the plans by 45%. This would give it a wingspan of 103 inches. Would like to power it with a 120 4-stroke. It would have flaps, airlirones and be a tail drager. Also think it would have foam wings. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. How about pull apart wings? How would you do this? I would also add wing struts for reenforcement and bolt on wings.

I have a pic of one somewhat that size. I would build the wing to save weight . A clear covering would look great on that wing. Something that size would need wing strusts and the two pice wing would be a must for easy transport, mabey even a removable tail section. [sm=surprised.gif]

A way to save weight when doing a foam wing of that size is to use spars and a semi-sheeted wing. Then you cut out the foam between the cap strips. When covered it will look like a built-up wing. Just don't use dope, the foam won't look too good!

I have also kicked this idea around as the Kadett brings back great memories of learning to fly.

Safe Flying!

I thought that I would make the foam wings and cut out bays to lighten it up a bit. I would also like to encorporate carbon fiber rods for strength. I want to be able to have a two peice wing but how would I go about it? The reason for the foam wing is for cost effectivness.

So you are looking for ideas?? Well I have a few. The first thing that I noticed in your remarks is that you are changing everything about the plane. So how about changing the shape of the fuselage and really disguise this bird. Since is it a high wing ... how about a 1930's Reliant SR-3. That was one the the first reliants with pretty much a barn door wing. The later ones had a gull wing. All you would have to do is strech the tail to split the elevator ... reshape the tail surfaces and make your own round cowl.

Oh, the decmiation of the trees...
Anyhoo, the Kadet can simulate just about anything..

I would think it would be eaiser/cheeper to buy a 12' Telemaster kit. The planes look and fly just about the same. The Telemaster kit builds with a 3 piece wing and removable tail. I'm not sure if a 1.20 4 stroke would be enough though.

I think the Kadet would fly better. I think they are considerably different. Just my opinion. Check out this website. It might help you with some of the structural problems. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaver...6/details.html

You know now you have to take pictures and keep us informed of the progress!

Thanks that helped out al lot. I agree that the kadet flys better. myself and my dad were discussing the 12ft telemaster last night and he said it just kind of lumbers around the sky. Pluss it is far to big for a 120 fs. I only want around a 103" ws not 144" as the telemaster is. I will keep informed with progress should have the wings cut out by next month. I am a slow builder.

Dont let the exta foot or so keep you from the telemaster. It breaks down very easly and a mini van or suv make it easy to transport. This was one I built frpom the old plans.

I haven't built a Kadet but I have built a Senior Telemaster. I just think it has too many structural weaknesses. I know that if I say one bad thing about a Telemaster I'll get the stuffing kicked out of me but I built mine by the instructions and it twisted like crazy. If you read the forums on the subject you will find people adding all kinds of mods trying to correct the twisting. And yes, I covered mine with Monokote! It is a fabulous kit and very high quality (some of the best die cutting I have ever seen) but it was designed as a utility plane. The Sig Kadet is designed to be a trainer. I like the proportions of the Kadet better and I've seen them both fly and I think the Kadet flies better. The Telemaster has much more lift because of the air foil in the horizontal stabilizer but it was designed to carry a payload. Besides I would like to see how you and your Dad tackle the Kadet project! You may want to investigate flaps on a plane that large. I have never done flaps but I did install flaperons and I think flaps would work better.

I will say one more thing good about the Telemaster. It's cool how that tail come off the ground by just giving it a little throttle!

Here is a another plane called a Precedent T240 It was sold as a giant trainer and setup for a 120 sized motor I have enlarged the plane and almost finished it. It flies like a Telemaster and even has the same flying tail. One last Plane...[sm=spinnyeyes.gif] try the website for the flying king http://www.btemodels.com/flyin_king.html It is about as close to giant Kadet as you can get.

The reason I choose the kadet is I already planed on building one as my last one bit the dust this summer and I like to go to the sig fest in july. Its only a few hours drive from here and its the only sig plane that i would want as a project this winter. Also I love to modyfyem.

Hello Stickmaster,

I ended up adding more braces in the tail section. The heavy horizontal stabilizer would twist the fuselage bad. I also had to add more braces under the wing because when I put the rubber bands on it would wrinkle the MonoKote. I didn't have as much problem with the wing twisting as some people I have talked to. I made sure I put all the cross supports the plans called for.

Bruce Tharpe of BTE worked for Sig and designed several of their planes for them thats why they have similar design characteristics. Any of BTE's airplanes would be an excellent choice!

mckeymouse,

You and your Dad should take Stickmaster's advice and take a look at the BTE website. They have two versions of the Fly'in King and one might fit the bill. You won't find a better quality kit and will be hard pressed to find a negative comment about them. They have many good design features that you should find attractive. If I build another trainer I probably will order a Flying King.
