RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G
Hi friends
As I have to go in military service for the next three weeks (starting tomorrow), I wanted to update you on my Connie project
In the last days and few weeks I d'dn't work that much on my connie model. One of the reasons is, that I always have to work in the living room. But in two weeks we move (I got some days of from the military service for the move) into the appartment above us. There I'll get my own hobby room Further I started to build a Jamara Decathlon.
Last week I was at the company WABO which will build the pneumatic gear for my model. The company is known in europe for good and reliable gears. Further a collegue of mine showed me how to create simple drawings in CAD Please find below some pictures and drawings:
Nosegear:
Maingear:
To check the drawings I built some small blocks based on the drawing measurements on which I placed the model:
And here some pictures of my visit at WABO (made with my handy, therefore the quality is not the best):
The Connie will get for one wheel on each maingear a pneumatic brake. Further the nosegear will have the original camber (?) of 5° for each nosegear wheel. The nosewheel is a 2 1/4" and the mainwheel a 3" robart wheel.
More information and pictures will be uploaded as soon as I get the gear after my military service.
Kindest regards from Switzerland,
Richie

Excellent Richie,
Wabo retracts should do the job, i just noticed lack of true offset angle on the nose gear in your drawings, the drawings i have they show offset of Nose strut at 12.5 degrees vs 7 degrees on yours and for mains its 6.3 vs 5 on yours, is there any special reason to cut down on these off set angles?, i want go scale degrees of offsets on my model and i would also go 2'' on nose wheels and 3" on mains...
Keep it coming she is looking sweet....

Hi Sammy,
Yes, the angles are not scale. The angle-difference on the maingear should not be visible. The angle difference on the nose gear will be partly "corrected" when mounting the gear. The reason for the "incorrect" angles is, that WABO can use "standard" parts for the gears. Therefore I also can get replacements parts in the future.
Best wishes,
Richie

Richie,
To me it more sounds the with correct angles Wabo retracts can where out or break faster, is this the reason you shallowed out on angles?, does the angle effect so much that retracts can't work properly and there correct operation gets affected?, i thought that retracts work at any angle you position them at.
Takecare,
Sammy

Ec121connie,
I need some more referance pictures from your EC121, I need shots of wing and tiptank attachment points, i want to see if there is semi round curvature on the L/E just before the into the tiptank joint is similar to T/E, let me know if you can get these for me, i will be glassing outer wings first following therest of the wing construction.
Thanks in advance once again.

Morning Richie,
I will be starting to make first of 4 engine pods, i like to know what is the incidence on your model, i like to keep mine at 0 degrees but like to know what is the best degree of incidence on engine pods.

I have a laser scnning and can scan aircraft. Cost could be a factor (travel to plane), but the service is available. See my site; www.3dpointcloud.com and www.aeronautica3d.com
Thanks

Fowler flaps experimental track and slider.
Today i achieved a milestone for this model, i had been thinking on the lines of making operational fowler flaps and mechanisum, i was looking into adopting miniture jack screw methord but finally today i laid all my ideas on paper and came up with very nice and effective system. I made my own drawing and created fowler flaps track out of scrap 1/8" balsa sheet as experimant. Once i made track i also made slider with pins to run in the tracks, well Voila!!, it worked perfect on the first time except to get right degrees i had to cut tracks bit longer and curverd top track at 90 degrees down so slider can rotate at 60 degrees with full deployment.
I will post pics soon.

RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G
Weekend update.
This past weekend was bit busy as i started to work on tail plane. I started by lengthening the paper templet of all 2 vertial stabs. I noticed the shape of the verticals was lacking about 2.5" from the ltop length and 1" from bottom fin, once i placed the templates on foam sheet to make the outline i increased the length on all three fins. Once outline was drawn on the foam sheet i took it to my scroll saw and cut them out. I used blue foam for outer fins and white foam for center fin. Then after cutting was done, the messy part of sanding foam cut outs into right shape and profile begin. After spending 5 hrs hand sanding i finally had my both outer top and bottom fins shaped right and profiled. I haven't shaped the center fin as yet, since its cut from regular big bead white foam, i will be getting portable 5" battery operated hot wire to cut it in shape.
I have take all the pictures of the progress so far, its just matter of time i post them once they are transfered fron camara into PC.

Little turn back update:
As i had promised before that i will post pictures from the begining as i had progressed with my project. I am adding all the pictures first and then i will add captions to them later, some are self explainatory too.

Here is how wing was done, give more attention to how spars slots were cut in the whole center wing, Special fixture box was made just to this step.
I have more latest pictures to add also, these will be the ones i have been talking about lately.

Good morning Sameer,
That's just GREAT!!!
Regarding your question to the incidence. I took 0° incidence on the pods.
Yesterday was a great day for me. I was at WABO to get my gear für the Connie Here some pictures:
Maingear.
Here you can see the break on one wheel of the gear.
Nosegear
Nosegear
Everything fitts well and I hope to get it mounted in the AC till the end of the year
And here is a drawing of the fowler flap system suggested by a collegue of mine:
Best wishes,
Richi

Hey hey Richie,
Welcome back budd, retracts looks sweet, i really like brakes and canted nose wheel set up, what is the length of nose strut, kind looks short in the close up picture, would it give AOA attitude to your model?. I am excited now to see your airframe on its gears.
Merry Christmas Richie

Hi Sammy,
I know, the nosegear looks a bit "strange". But I guess is has also to do with the diameter of the leg itselves. The diameter is not scaled down and in therefore a little to big. Also the front wheel are a little to large. But I decided to take 2 1/2" instead of 2" to also be able taxiing on grass. But overall I'm very happy with the result.
Of course I know it definitively when the gear is mounted on the AC. But I hope to be ready soon
Cheers and Merry Christmas,
Richie

RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G
Yeah you are right Richie, it does look overly done and very stocky too, it more looks as main gear strut then nose gear strut. For grass nose wheels between 2"- 2 1/4" should be good enough. Well let see how these will look once mounted on your model, it they looked good and right then i'll ask you to get me the set of struts too but for me Nose strut has to be thinner and more on lines of scale, i can add dummy steering actuators myself either from plastic or brass tubes.

Hi Sammy,
I guess I do not have the drawings you wished. You'd like to get the drawings of the model or of the original?
Of course the gears are not scale. But I also plan to prepare the gears a little to get them more scale
Best wishes,
Richie

This more looks an offering from Nitroplanes.com, plus there is a company called BVM Models that produces turbine version of Bobcat, so i don't think one needs to do scratch build model of this jet, but if you want larger scale then whats avaiable then you can do as scratch built.
Sorry i can't help you with plans for it, try Jets section for drawings.

I like to get your model's drawings to do engine pods on my model, the ones i have are very old and there is lots to eliminate to make it workable, your's look preety easy and stright forward and easy to read. Let me know if you could send the copies to me. Thanks.

Few latest and current pictures. Fuselage is all ready for glassing, wing still needs slotting to be done, channels to be made, so its still away from glassing. Tailplane is also in progress, all vertical tails are hand cut and sanded to the shape, i have also added new trailing edge strip to form true taper scale look, i still have to take that picture.
