RE: Scratch building 105
1st Lower air intake scoop is layed up in the mold as I make this post.
First i did double layer lay up of the main body and then i did single layup for the intake scoop itself. Once resin is cured enough that i can do 2nd layer in the scoop mold, i'll do that in few mins from now. Man what a tricky lil mold this is to do lay up in, but i got good handle on it...
Rear dome pieces will be done in CF, so that is next online to make in the mold....i will be copulating 1/8" plywood square at the layup time on the dome pieces, plus just for piece of mind, i will be double layering the plywood from the back with CF to get more reinforcement at the motor mounting area...

Never mind, you have already made the mold.
Thats what I get for not checking me email more often. : )

Don't worry, i have few of these foam balls to make a right shaped fairing, first one was glassed to see and test on different foil tapes, films i have to see which one will capture compound curves of redome shape as if this piece was used as one....

Hi Sam,
Everything looks as if it is coming along great. Keep at it. KISS doesn't apply to models like this.
Don't forget to cool the ESCs as you work on cooling the motors. Also, are you going to cut out the windows and
install plexiglass panes?

Thanks for chiming in George, great to see you posting once again on this thread.
Yes i have esc cooling in my mind too, most likely i'll be using Plush 60's and they could go in the lower intake scoop to keep cool while flying or on ground...

RE: Scratch building 105
Process is starting to speed up a bit by using heat gun to speed up resin's curing time.
Number 2 Lower Air Intake Scoop is half way cured already, all 4 Scoops should be done by tomorrow at some point.
Once these are done, then Domes will start to take shape, by end of this week hopefully all 4 complete cowlings should be done...YES!!!
EDIT: It's 257am now and site is still crashing for picture uploads!!!! "Error: 500 - Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed."

RE: Scratch building 105
Second lower air intake scoop is done and it's the first one to be joined together as one unit.
After the joint glue cured, scoop was dry assembled on number 2 engine on the aircraft itself.
Note: I tried to upload pics but site's picture upload feature is crashing for last 2hours!...will try later...

With extra resin left from the Scoops casting, cowling number 1 was put back in the mold and was reinforced from inside by laying up another layer of fibreglass.

RE: Scratch building 105
Last nite number 3 scoop was made, i used different method to do this lay up and it worked out pretty good.
Number 4 scoop will be done tonite and that's end of making these scoops for now until i complete these cows by making the domes and then i will cast 2 more complete cowlings, 1 for Franky and other for display purposes at events n such.
Out of 2.5 yards of satin weave fibreglass that i bought, this is what's left after making these cowlings, scoops and scoop molds.
Note:
Im going to make molds of the fuselage sections and some sections of tail, plus nacelles. I will be making short kits of this aircraft that will include fibreglass parts, "Lots of them" and hot wired foamcores for the wing. I will also make instructions for making fins and stabilizer and all the wood that would be required to complete this model. All this will happen through out the summer season post first flight of my Constellation. So who ever is interested can start submitting there names through Pm's...

RE: Scratch building 105
Sam right now I have three planes in process, ten ready to go out to the field at any time and about another ten or fifteen to build. At this point my wife would kill me if I brought in another plane. I have to build a few more before I can even think about getting anything else to build.
Although it is one, like I told you, that I'd like to build at some point just not in the next few months...
I need to get through some of the ones I all ready have before I even think about another. I have a new design that I have been working on for a few years that I gotten close to doing the final drawings on that I really want to start on soon.

RE: Scratch building 105
Out of usable paint brushes to apply resin with to make the 4th scoop, so had to do something in terms of moving forward with progress, started to lightly hand sand cockpit window #3, it took 1hr to get it to fine sanding stage. Same i did with main window #4, this one took 2hrs to get it to fine sand and primer stage.
PS: Now i can certainly see how much time, effort is needed to make molds and then cast parts from them, no wonder fibreglass parts and kits aren't cheap to get!. Same for getting final prep work done before primer stage takes place followed by painting or applying aluminium foil coverings...

RE: Scratch building 105
Back to the mold again...
Well at the time i did layup for the dome's mold, it's inner flat surface didn't come out totally fine, few areas were damaged by air bubbles including edges of square depression where plywood will get copulated in when domes will be casted from this mold.
I got some epoxy putty to fix these areas, epoxy putty is 2 part putty that once mixed together by hands will be ready for use. It has solid play-do type of texture. So i'm going to take some of it and mix it together first, then it will be put into the damaged areas from air bubbles, once fully cured, i will then use sand paper to flush it smooth with rest of the flat surface. This will also be used to fix edges of square depression.

What are you copulating in Sammy ??
What are you copulating in Sammy ??
There will be 1/8" x 2" x 2" plywood piece in the center of the domes that i will capulate between 2 layers of CF. This piece will be the base to mount motor mounts on.

Even though i took a break to build the wings of my big Concorde model, i haven't forgot about my Connie!...
Look what i found to replicate Cooling fairing ring that goes between prop and the main air intake of the cowling....maybe not perfect but works for me...what do u guys think...

Sam,
Picture was found here : http://www.rbogash.com/connie.html Scroll down.
In the future please post some pictures of your prototype aircraft when yopu ask for advice about how the model compairs with the prototype.
You should really have a spinner on the prop correctly spaced as you make decisions as to how it compairs. As you can see from the photos your cooling duct is sticking out way too far and the shape will be wrong as you pull it back and attach a spinner. I know how dificult it can be to "get it right". Been there and done that.
You are doing a great job so don't settle for less than correct.
George

RE: Scratch building 105
Here are couple pics of my giant Concorde models presently under built with S Connie, this past long weekend i built it's right whole wing starting at Friday afternoon by cutting ribs and spars on Satruday, Sunday and Monday were dry assembly days, today i managed to get tail and aft fuselage dry assembled with rest of the airframe structure. Coming weekend i will be making left wing of her and then glue all parts of both wings together.
1/12th scale Concorde.
17 feet length
7 feet wing span
Propulsion: 4 x 90mm Freewing edf's with 1750KV motors on 6S
Estimated weight 25lbs to 27lbs RTF...

You have a very valid point George, i will do as you advised from now my friend. Yes fairing on my cowls are sticking out a lot then they should be, i will just use there half frontal part that will be butt joined to spinner's back plates on there back sides.
Yes i should technically make these cooling fairings from balsa block but after spending so much time already, i want to use something close enough and get the model done and look great....maybe i'm cheating but i'm sure you understand where im coming from...
