Design & construction of Frise (Friese) ailerons?
Hi guys,
Can anyone out there shed some light on how to design and construct 'scale' Frise (Friese) type ailerons? In particular,
1] What angle between wing TE and aileron LE?
2] Does the above mentioned angle remain the same across the span of the aileron hinge-line?
3] Where abouts do you place the hinge fulcrum?
In Andy Lennons book, 'Basics of R/C Model Aircraft Design', he shows the following...
...but the main problem with this is that I am building a scale WW2 warbird where the 3-views show the hinges to be on the bottom of the aileron.
Also, do you really think the mass loading shown is necessary on a scale model where it won't be flown particularly fast?
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!
Steve

What you show claims to be a "modified" Frise.
His book also shows this as a Frise type, and this is what I used on my Jungmeister. It would satisfy your need for bottom hinge.

On Kadets, I do it this way..

I don't bother with mass balancing.

Nice Frise on those Kadets! And flaps to boot!! I have toyed with both barn door and stip ailerons on my Kadets and like the strip type better. However that said, I'm building a Swick Taylorcraft and the plans call for Frise ailerons.
Due to the lack of central support in the aileron strip did you add stiffness? Have they given you noticable differences in control over simple barn door or stip type ailerons?
Thanks!

I use a hefty leading edge on the Frise style ailerons on the Kadets. It keeps them stiff across the span.
A really long span, I'd put a center hinge also.
