Mike Pastro's CT-114 or F-18

RE: Mike Pastro's CT-114 or F-18
I remasked the two areas on the wing and repainted these sections again. Then quickly removed the masked within 5 minutes.

And a little bit more, painted off the stablizer area. Just the fins and canopy sections left to paint gold. The gold flashed so fast, I masked, sprayed and removed the mask a couple of minutes later.
To be Continued . . . . .
Found a fishing scale at home. The plane at this stage is only 3.5 pounds (no radio or engine) . Not too shabby.
Oct. 22-2009: purchased a digital fishing scale. The fuselage is 2lbs. 5 oz. and the wing is 1 lb. 7 oz. (1.4375 lbs).... so, 3.75 lbs. OK course I have the fuselage wrapped in paper for painting. Looking back at post #68, the bare wing (minus lex) was 1.06 lbs; so fibreglass and paint added 0.3775 lbs. The fuselage w/o lex, fins and front canopy was 1.46lbs. . . . . + all that stuff, fibreglass and paint. + 0.852 lbs.

I think it's time to go to bed. What do you do when the spouse is away and the kids are in bed. Paint of course. Still having problems with paint peeling on the edge of the masking film. Have to respray the left fin. Also, the masking tape removed some of the blue on the inside surface of the fin. Also have to touch up next at the canopy . . . . just one slight crazed surface under the canopy. Other side is perfect.Rats. I'm going to have to be more careful of my primer and paint combination.

Sanded the paint with 2000 grit paper and reshot the area near edge and under the canopy. Looks better. Peeled back the liquid mask around the canopy. No problems there at least. Had to cut some of the liquid mask as I pulled it off. Just some touch ups to do with the blue and gold.
I like the beta for the multi-file progress bar.

Some touch ups and currently painting the control surfaces. I need the plane complete to much the pattern for masking.
To be continued. . . .
I noticed the photo multi-loader is quicker.

Well done Jim!!.
You are doing super work replicating this awesome demo livery on your F-18. I have DF model of F-18 that i want to paint in this same livery, im saving your pics on HD for the time when i'll get to my model. I'll be watching your progress very closely..

Thanks for the kind remarks Sam. My paint schemeis not exactly in scale proportions to the demo aircraft. The RCM model has alarger wing area and is placed some further forward then the actualCF-188.The vertical fins were almost perfect scale proportions. I had to adjust the paint scheme to accommodate the model, changing the curve of some ofthe lines but trying to maintain the look of the 2009 Demo Aircraft. There are several good photos on the internet. I found a couple which were almost a perfect top and bottom view of the plane in addition to my own which I took at Canadian Forces Day in Portage La Praire in June.

No problem Jim, it's looking stunning even at this stage!!
Yeah i hear ya on changing lines to accommodate the off scale proportions of your model.
Can you post some pictures of the bottom of the model and also if you can share all the pictures you have of 2009 Centennial of flight demo CF-18 "Canada Hornet 1" with me/us that would be great. Thanks

Hi Sam, I still have the white and gold stripes to complete on the bottomof the model on the under side of the wing. I started painting with the bottom of the wing and forgot about the white stripe. Duh. As I mentioned before, I found some top and bottom photos on the internet. I scaled these up or down in autocad to get them in the same size.

Not much more progress on this plane. I have to finish some of the painting details (stripes and maple leafs). No photos coming until I get a new camera. Old (6 years?) Canon camera died.
For those you missed the real plane last summer.

Well some progress on this plane. The garage was warm enough to quickly spray the white and gold on the bottom of the wing. Found out I had a compatability problem when the one gold stripe "ate" through the blue paint. I guess the "Rona Gold" was not compatible with the Rusto-leumblue paint. I had masked off for the other gold area's on plane. The white was rustoleum. I have to consider whether I might finish the gold on the underside of the stabilizer or not.

RE: Mike Pastro's CT-114 or F-18
Purchased a new can of Rona "Gold" and finished the underside of the stabalizers with the gold stripes. Shook the can up well. It came out not too bad. It didn't craze the paint. Covered well, and not a thick coating of paint. Next is decals.
I think the next time I paint a plane it's going to be a Kaosor some Sig product. This has been an experience to say the least. How many of you fellows did a perfect paint job the first time?

Slowly working on this model. Did a couple of decals on the tail. The decals were done using Staples large shipping labels, inkjet printed and covered with Lustrekote Clear to fuel proof the decal. The Hornet wasn't on theCentennial of Flight CF-188, but I like it.

Hopefully will have this plane up for next spring. Spent part of the summer trying to get some more flight time in before trying this plane out.

Thanks, it looks better in the photos. Up close it can use some improvements in the paint department. Next build will be better. Practise makes perfect. I just want to see it in the air at this point in time.

RE: Mike Pastro's CT-114 or F-18
Jim,
Your plane looks really great... love the color combination.
I completed my F-18 a while back, but have only had a chance to fly it once.
The strangest thing I've ever seen occurred on its first flight. The engine died while making a fairly low (~40 feet) and slow pass, the lack of forward speed rendered the control surfaces ineffective. Usually, I try to pitch the nose down to gain forward air speed, but there wasn't enough weight in nose to allow it to tip. The plane came to a complete stop in the air, and proceeded to make a vertical landing. We were all stunned to see a plane actually do this on its own. The only damage was a minor tweak to the main landing gear wire. Since I changed the wing design from the original plans, I had to recalculate the CG. I think it needs a tad more weight in the nose.
Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

My how a year has gone by fast. Spent most of the summer flying other planes and deciding on a power plant for this plane. Servos are installed on all surfaces. Just needs the engine installed. I was considering electric power, but decided to stick to glow. Removed the stickers from the plane this weekend. The edges weren't staying down an it bothered me every time I walked past it. If it was at the field and not in the basement, it probably wouldn't have bothered me at all.

I found a canopy which would fit this plan great. Check out the KCF-18 for Dan Eaton's 90mm ducted fan model. This is available from www.parkflyerplastics.com . I purchased three. It longer, and has the proper front curve for the F-18. I can just place the KCF-18 canopy over the one on my model. They practically fit together. Next model has to be lighter. The F-18 on the right is Dan Eaton's 90mm F-18.

Well tomorrow is the Show and Tell for the Winnipeg Radio Control Club. Let's see what type of response I get. Had to decide on an engine to get this going. Super Tigre 51. I think it will need all the power it can get. I was saving this for the Hangar 9 F-22 which is in the closet, but this needs it more.Jim

RE: Mike Pastro's CT-114 or F-18
Well the response was somewhat favorable. Comments were to have anengine with a least 14000 rpm and a lot of runway to take off. Quite a few of the members would like to see this fly. It was nice to see quite a turn out for the club spring show and tell. It looked small compared to some of the other models. Maybe I shouldn't have positioned it between two giant scale models.

Would be nice to see her in the air. If only we had a local flying club with a tarmac runway id build one of these in a shot keep up the good work JIM
