Have you ever built from internet plans?
I built this Stik from plans you can find all over the web and have enjoyed it as much as any plane I've owned. I was wondering if anyone else has downloaded someones plans off the internet and had a good experience building and flying their new plane. Please include pictures if possible.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Back in July of 2004, RCM had a DELTA wing unit with a 44.5" WS. The article was about 7-8 pgs long with about half of them being plans. Although the plans were only magazine size, it was in a PDF form. It was The ARROW. (Not the AVRO)
I scanned it, sharpenned it a little and printed the plans out full size with my 36" ENCAD printer
I am just now to the point of deciding seriously, what engine to install. Without the motor she is now weighing in at 6.25 lbs
-------------
last year, I found a 1941 printout page -- only 8.5" x 11" of a 96" WS sailplane. It was a GULL Wing called The AIRHOPPER
That was an intreresting set of plans - originally set up for 100% FREE FLIGHT. I chnaged it all for three channel control. In fact, I modified the tail end to being a full flying stab.
no pix right now.
------------
I started on the body of an XP55 -- that still sitting on the "lets finish this one - later" shelf
------------
I did a small P51 SLOPE SOARER (36" WS)
------------
and right now, I just came across some really clean plans (4 pgs) of a SUKHOI 26 mx
-----------
Oh yea! I almost forgot. I spent about 6 hours sifting thru a bunch of dxf files and found somthing called INSIGHT
Three pgs -- I JUAST printed them out FULL SIZE last week
NO ONE has ever heard of this --- It is BIG --- calls for a 1.6 engine -- 72" long fuselage and I think about 54" WS
Actually 24" WS on each side and a 6 - 7 inch widew FUSE
I havn't even made an inventory list yet of what balsa to use. The lightest is .25 sold fuse walls with doublers, .125" ribs
and the in/out wing sleeves are 7/8" diameter
WS is mid FUSE.
My next project will eith be the INSIGHT or the SUKOHI 26/ If I go with the SUKHOI, I'll bump up the overall by about 33%
Other than that, I still have a 36.5" FORCE ONE (same author as the ARROW) hanging up in the ceiling. I was going to install a .40 in it but changed my mind till I find something larger and the right $$$
Say, while I think of it, let me ask hoe to do something.
I have an electric ARROW FASTENERS staple gun. I claims it will also use a 5/8" PIN
I went out to HOME DEPOT today & bought the pins but I cannot figure out how or better yet, where to install them
any suggestions?

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Years ago I built a small (say, 1300mm wingspan, about 50" ) Hawker Sea Fury, I don't even know any more where on the net I got the CAD-plan. I enjoed it very much, the Fury was also flying quite well... unfortunately, I don't have any pics of it [&o] ... There are some really good plans on the net, but lots of them are in my opinion not engineered well enough.
Based on some techniques of exactly that plan I designed my D-3802A (see pictures). I used the same way to build e.g. the fuselage with curved plywood side walls, the same sort of wing construction but with a different profile (Gö796), aileron linking by using bicycle brake wires and a central servo etc... also this one flew just great!
regards
Chris

Some have PM'ed and asked where I got the plans. If you google "Classic Ugly Stik" you will get several links but here is one.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
I thought you would never ask. I built this 3D from plans that I downloaded from Profili. I converted the .dxf to a .pdf then to a .jpg image. I then used Poster 7 software to tile print the full size plans. The plane flys great with an Evolution .46.

JDBuddy,
Now that one raises my interest. I'm going out and look for it now. Did you have any problems building it or was it fairly straight forward? Does it have a name?

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Go to http://www.profili2.com/eng/default_plans.htm
search for "3D."
The build was very straight forward - very few ribs, formers for the box fuselage. No instructions, so you get to be creative. Let me know if you need suggestions.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Many of the things I have downloaded over the years (like those within the top of page reference places) are more appropriately labeled as DRAWINGS, certainly not a PLAN. For a plan tells the holder something, has instructions associated with it, notes, and a lot more. Quite often the folks who give something to the Jo Jusko site are instead giving a drawing, for there is very little information, it is basically a picture w/o text, just a title.
It is a lot harder to do a PLAN than a picture or a drawing.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Prop,
I actually used a Twist canopy. I haven't owned a Twist, just purchased the canopy hoping it would fit another plane. Percision Avaiation used to make a plane called the 3DMini. I beleive that the plans I used are based on this plane. I used the Poster 7 software to set the wing at 44" and that set the fuselage at 39" (not including the rudder). The ribs and formers that printed out worked fine.

I did lots of scratch building from internet plans,
my second plane was also the same stick, it was some time ago,
lovely plane was using an OS FS 90 on this one crashed it
cause of radio interference.....[:@]
full power dive into the ground.... Still have the tail though..
Built several others afterwards.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Sorry no pics at the moment but it's funny you should ask that.
I went back to hobby several years ago after my 1st son was born. Being rather bored with changing diapers and doing little else I discovered free plans online. Some were junk but most were convincing enough that I am into plane #3. Currently I'm building an .020 Stick for my 4 year old. When thats done I'm going back to the Donatelli 1/2A Bipe I started just before son #2 was born. I am convinced enough now that I have an entire library compiled of nothing but free from the web plans that I build from.
For me it has to be a PLAN, an A-Z clearly defined plan with construction in mind and not some stupid 3 view sketch.

I built a Drake II from plans that I got from myunclewillies.com. I'm very happy with the way it flies - both off of ground, and water.
Video clips.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
I like that one Bipe Flyer. There is a guy in our club that has a lake on his property and he invites us out to fly. Guys are spending one or two hundred for edo floats so they can fly off his lake. The Drake would be the way to go because you only have to build one float. I really like the touch and goes and it sure rolls and loops nice. What did you cover it in, monokote or silk and dope? I would think you would want it to be nice and water tight and silk and dope would be best.

RE: Have you ever built from internet plans?
Thanks PropSpinner. It's covered with Ultracote. I've used it on a couple of flying boats and I've had no problems with leaks.
OK, this is kind of the opposite. These are planes that other poeple have built from my plans.
LST, Cloud Buster, Little Pitts, Bulldog Pitts, Firefly, Squirt and Mini Bipe Stik.
You can downlaod the LST and Bipe Stik plans from the following links.
