Default 3d Laser Scanning

Hi,
Are there interests out-there for 3D laser scanning services? I am looking at potentially providing such a service for very reasonable costs ($100 for small simple model to... Well... sky is the limit... ) . Type of output would be STL, OBJ formats and others are possible.

Yes!

Especially if you decided to use solidworks to do the scanning.

errr, if you're paying $100 a pop to get a plastic model scanned... why not go whole hog, spend $2500 and get a scanto3d machine. turnkey desktop laser scanning (and skinning) for $2500. frickin amazing.

3d scanning of actual aircraft is the way to go.

Scanning the model is the easy part. Coverting the point cloud data to a usable solid model with smooth surfaces is the expensive part.

We have five aerial photographers local to here who used to be big into photogametry. Same firms over past 1-2 years now have been offering 3-D scanning of project areas (outside), or of small objects which can be brought into their office. I get the free trade magazines sent here once per month, and seems this it quite the fashion now across N.A. and such firms are offering this service as a fill in. Each issue has an article about how one manufacturere is trying to outdo another, and prices keep dropping. I wondered if you wanted a full size A/C 3-D scanned, it it would be cheaper to bring to their office. You could thus go to the yellow pages and look up aerial photogrmetry places that are local to you and obtain same service.

And you had better love the project for it is going to take you a long time to clean up the results and make useable. And a new modern and fast computer, for the simple regen may take more than a few seconds.

PolyTec has a 3D laser scanning setup with dynamics capability. Came in and showed us their wares, and in about a half day they got test cell vibration data on an operating engine that would have taken us 3 days with our ordinary techniques (surface mount accelerometers). Instant data reduction, too, into formats we could use.

I believe the setup, with software, is available for about $500,000.

Best wishes,
Dave Olson
