Default Wing Flap Area

Are there any design guidelines for the amount of flap area that is requred for each flap as a percentage of the total wing area? I have been using six to seven percent of the total wing area for the area of each aileron and this has worked out fine. My models have wing areas around 1200 square inches and weigh twenty pounds. They are powered by Brison 3.2s. They are sport type and semiscale models.

Andy Lennon suggest the following in his book on model aircraft design:

60%-85% of span and 25% of cord.

I have used his method and it has worked well for me.
One additional note throw of over 30% are just airbrakes.....plane will drop like a stone...
