I use a piece of hardwood stick in the size the notch needs to be. Glue a strip of medium sand paper to one side, and then sand the notch in. Makes for a perfect fit.

I usually make shallow cuts the depth of the slot using the band saw, taking side by side cuts for the width of the slot.

TLH101's method is as recommended by E.T. Packard (Cleveland Models) of years past. I've done it that way, and it's great. The slot is a good fit. The bandsaw method will also work, but it takes a lot of care to make sure the slot is as good a fit as TLH101's method. I'd stick with the sandpaper myself.
