Default Help I have floppy wings.

I got a used 90" SpaceWalker from a club member I was trying to put it in to the air but when I joined the wings the way it was designed which is two thin plywood blades sticking out of the wings that stick through the fuse and then sandwich in side and bolt through holes with blind nuts on the back side. It is a very flimsy set up if I get on one wing tip and my son on the other and we lift the plane the wings raise about 2 full inches on each tip before lifting the fuse up.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

I have thought of installing wing tubes but with the dihedral this thing has the tube could only go in to each wing about 6 inches maybe a little more.
How about changing the plywood blades out with aluminum and joining it with the spar for a ways back in to the wing.
What about struts from the top of the fuse down to the top of the wings to make everything more solid.

Has any one any experience with a 90" Bud Nosen Space Walker.

The real space walker has struts, so my best guess would be to put some struts first, then go from there.

Spacewalkers don't have struts, but yours could be the first

I think the easiest way for you would be to modify the fuse and wings to use plug-in aluminum wing tubes at the wing's CG. When I say easiest, I don't mean "real easy", I really mean that's the easiest I can think of. Except for adding struts which would probably be even easier.

I'm not familiar with the design of the Nosen Spacewalker, but at only 90" wingspan, my personal first choice would be to join the wing halves permanently and make a solid, one-piece wing and forget the two-piece wing altogether.

Yes, just join the wings together and forget about it. The Sig 3rd scale Spacewalker at 104" has a center section which gives you lots of room, but if your 90" wings are in two pieces, you don't have any choice. If you don't join them, they will be weak no matter what you do.

LOL, maybe you are thinking of the Ryan STA. It, for sure, did have struts.

I think I would look at an alum. wing joiner instead of the plywood. Depends on the type of flying you do. I don't think I would trust it if the wing has a lot of flex to it. Can you get in to change the joiner without too much trouble?

i personally would just add some struts. make life easy and go fly the plane!! of course thats just me. now if you are tryin to make it "original" then fix it internally. but if ya just wanna fly i would go with the struts. besides i think they look kewl and are very functional too!

Jimestes, This is the solution I'm using on my 100" Tigermoth, to join the wings.

Not easy but would work.

The best solution would be to install a wing joiner tube. This will require some surgery on the wing to integrate the joiner into the spar, but better to work now than turn the plane into a lawn-dart later on...

I recall that TNT Landing Gear sells wing tubes; there are also other sources.

Default I built this same plane.

This was a RC Modeler plans for a 92 inch Spacewalker.
Mine was joined exactly as you describe, except I didn't have the wing slop that you have.

My plywood spars go through the fuselage and all the way out flush with the outside edge of the opposite side. Also the sides of the fuselage at this point is 1/4 plywood, with an access opening just big enough to sandwich the two spars.

One wing half will sit in the fuselage without support. When both wing half's are installed, then all the keeper bolts do is prevent slide out. They are not for support. I could use rubber bands and do the same thing.

Mine looked just like yours, red and black, powered with a OS 120 it was a good flying airplane.

Hope this helps

I guess I should have anounced the passing of this fine bird I lost it when the monokote exploded off of one wing in flight.

Default Wow! Thats some crash.

I am surprised that you couldn't land that plane with just the one wing.

Thats is an unfortunate crash. Hope there is a Spacewalker in your future. I love the way this plane flies. I have had two of them and both have been covered with Sig koverall. Much stronger than Monokote.
