Default Determining engine size for scratch designs

Hi Folks
Something I have always wondered about when scratch designing is how you determine the engine size for the prototype model you are designing.
Is there any rough rules of thumb that can be applied or is it mostly experience?
Ie for example If i was designing a Scratch built Midget Mustang of around the 6 foot mark what petrol engine would I put in it. My gut instinct is around the 40 to 50cc mark. Am I wrong?

That's a big fat fuselage if you go scale... 35cc up probably will do it.
