About to start building Ryan's Rebel
I've received plans and ordered wood for a Ryan's Rebel, which I hope to start on this weekend. In reviewing the plans, I've noticed that the scale on the sheets measures 5 7/8" actual, not the 6" it should be. I was planning on copying the plans at the local Kinkos, but they just do an exact duplicate. My question is, should I just forge ahead, and not worry about the 1/8", or what?
A second question popped into my head. If the plans are done up in CAD, why am I getting something that is copied poorly rather than plotted accurately?
I've built a Sr. Telemaster and Kadet Sr. from kits, but their plans seemed to be copied more accurately.
I'm psyched to get this thing in the air, as I plan to put a Ryobi on it and make into the mule for my video downlink.
Any suggestions would be gratefully welcomed!

About to start building Ryan's Rebel
Come to think of it on my plans the 48"x 1/8 balsa sheets for the fuselage sides
were a 1/4 in" short. So I had to add a
longer tail block to get the length to
match the original plans.. I tried a kinko's
copy but that did not copy to scale and was distorted. I ended up using the original plans.
This is my first scratch build, so far its been over come and improvise and
hope that it flys when I'm finished.
It been fun though..

I contacted RCM Magazine, and they indicated that there was an error with the plan. They will be shipping me a plotted version of the plan, which should eliminate the problem. I received a box of balsa from Lonestar yesterday, and will start fresh when I get the new set of plans.
I was pleased with the quick response from RCM. They indicated that they will soon have their plans operation running off of plotters.

Thanks for the info Ensignnolo.
I'm already finished with the fuselage
and will stick with what I have.. I know
to check the scales on the plans in
the future.

FYI. I provided RCM with both an electronic set of plans and a "to scale" plotted set of plans on velum for blueprint reproduction. I can assure you the plans on velum were dead on. Sometimes when using blueprint paper it can shrink a bit due to humidity & temperature. Hope they strt plottig them out soon. That should insure a "to scale" set of plans for the customer.

Improvise! Who ever builds just like the plans anway. But this is a great basic design..........Flew my rebel today! Ryobi power.I did notice the length difference in fusealage but thought it was me half asleep.Anyway the plane flies great Made a few mod's . Nothing major....Lowered wing 5/8" to support two screw wing attachment.Rib size to 1/16" changed spar size to 1/4 x 5/8 (on hand) Trimmed wingspan to fit short box truck.O ya, then lightened it every place I could. 11 lbs 4 oz ready to fly but an extra 1.5 oz. in the tail to balance. Flew like a homesick angel. Thanks Ryan for the design.

The replacement set of plans I received seem better. I"ll just go ahead and start laying down some balsa, and see what happens. On to the arduous task of cutting out ribs!

Sorry about the delay in answering, I've been busy due to unexpected two week forced vacation at work, which is better than being furloughed, I guess. Despite the time off, I have not started the plane.
Tomorrow, however, I will cut the ribs on a friends overarm pin router. He scratch builds exclusively, so I'm going to let him teach me the ways of the art! I'll advise later in the week.

Just an update. I spent an hour yesterday cutting out the rib's on a friend's overarm pin router. As soon as I clean off a space on my building table, probably tomorrow, I'll start laying up the wing. Let's see what happens!

Just wondering what servos you used for the elevators.
I looking at using Hitec HS-77BB Low profiles for each
elevator half.. spec at .
14sec/60 degrees @6.0volts
76.3 oz/in @6.0volts
Anybody have experience with these servos..
I initially planned HS-605's but they seem to be to big
to mount in the tail for elevator control.

RE: About to start building Ryan's Rebel
Here's mine.
Put a Homelite 25cc on her. Seems to fly best on a zinger 18x8 or APC 18x6. A bit over proped on 18x8. but can pull loops
from level flite. G-38 would be much better. Build it with flaps, snaps rolls are very crisp, stalls are straight ahead. Not a
vertical machine. My boy is learning to fly on it.

RE: About to start building Ryan's Rebel
I'm sure it is not a vertical machine with the 25cc but it is a vertical machine with a G-38. I sometimes land with flaps (programmed with radio) and it slows down real nice. Glad to hear you can train someone on it! Awesome.
