Default double gull wing biplane

I just started construction on a plane I have thought about building for a long time. I always wanted to build a sunray but never ordered the plans. I started the bottom wing and than thought why not make another one for the top.will post pics as I go.

I think the racer called "Johnathon Livingston Seagull" had inverted gull wing on top and gull wing bottom.

The Cobra by Dan Santich is a beautiful airplane and flies like a homesick angel. The plans came out in 1984 in MAN and are still available from them; and I bought a set of them waaaaay back when. The first one I built had a G62 in it and would do anything I asked of it....of course I got too smart with it and re-kitted it one day.

After building too many ARFs lately I decided to check out my plans box and came across this wonderful old double gull-wing bipe; and I just knew I had to build it a again with a few minor changes. This time it's going to have a ZDZ80 in it for power, ailerons on the lower wing, and I 'm going to treat it with special TLC.

A couple of weeks ago I tried to call Dan Santich and tell him I was going to build the ol' girl again.....unfortunately he has passed away. What a genius he was! I built every one of his Hots series and loved them all. As far as I'm concerned, if Dan designed it, I'll build it.

Not too long ago in one of the electric flyer magazines somebody built the Cobra with an electric motor in it; and he couldn't heap enough praise on the plane. Said it would do anything he was capable of directing it to do. So far I've cut out foam wings, sheeted 1/2 the upper left wing. Got the fuselage just about finished and the cowl arrived today via UPS! "Gonna be a good day, Tater"! (Ron White)

Good luck with what ever you decide, but you can't go wrong with the Cobra.

Will get some pix going soon. In the meantime, click on this site to see some finished Cobras....I especially like the one from John Pirozek about 2/3rds down the page. http://www.all3com.com/Hobbies/index.htm

whatwind,

After checking the dates of the posts here I realized you haven't kept us up-to-date for two months now. I certainly hope we didn't hijack your thread about the double gull wing bipe you initially started with, as that wasn't my intention for sure. Just thought you might be interested in seeing some pictures of the Cobra.

It would be great to hear how your project is coming along and if you've had a chance to fly it yet. If not, good luck with it for sure. Please keep us posted.

P.S. Where is Leander? I've got a daughter and her family in The Woodlands, just north of Houston. Anywhere near you?

Not a problem .with the heat new car new dog "who is not allowded in the shop because of chewing issues"I havent had much time to work on it. I have one more section to sheat on the bottom wing than I can figure out how to mount it to the fuse My planes never look that great but most fly good. sheeting gull wings has been a real experince.

You're right about sheeting gull-wings for sure. That's just one of the many reasons I prefer to cut foam wings, sheet them; and then cut the angles on my radial arm saw. They line up straight and true that way, but gull-wings are still a bit of extra work.

One of my daughters and her family have been staying with me this past month, so I haven't made a lot of progress on the Cobra. I did finish the upper left wing panels and am going to assemble the top wing this weekend (Daughter and family leave for China tonight) so I'll post some pix soon of the completed upper wing and trial fitting to the fuse.

We got a heavy dose of cold weather and snow in the mountains the past few days, so flying time is down to zero....which means more time for building I guess. I did have some time to run the ZDZ80 to be sure it's ready to go (bought it a few years ago but have never run it)....I'm just SURE I'm the only modeler who's bought and engine and then let it sit for a few years...right?

Well, hang in there and good luck with your project.

These gull-wings always take a little more time for sure, but they're definitely worth it when they're all done.....so just enjoy the build. Two of my kids and their families have been staying with me for the past two months so building came to a standstill, but now they have moved to China and Las Vegas......let the building begin!!!!!!

I've finished the top wing now and am about to begin the lower. I cut the foam wings earlier when I cut the upper, so now it's time to get some sheeting put together and cover them. If the holidays don't cause too much disruption around here I could get this thing done sometime around the first of the year (right...who am I kidding?)

The long awaited plans for the Hyperbipe arrived today and I would like to get it done in time for springtime flying....would like to take the double gull-wing Cobra and the Hyperbipe out together for their maiden flights if possible. Too many planes to build and just not enough time.....

Hang in there,

Steve

Been having to scratch my head a lot on this build. Finnished the sheeting but had to start over on the fuselage was way to short. I'm going to have add six to eight inches to it.
I'm going to put the servos's in the top wing . I heated a flat rod to melt the foam for the wire holes and ran golden rod tho pull the wire with. I just got broadband wow now I can up load pictures in under 15 minutes. y2k6vett please fell free to keep us up dated on the crobra.

Glad to hear that you're still moving along with your double-gullwing, even though it may seem like it's slow-goin'. I keep telling myself just "enjoy the build", but sometimes it appears that nothing is getting done...we must remember that it's not a race, just a wonderful experience. My late wife would tell me: "I was so FAR behind, I actually thought I was in first place"!

I have made some progress on the Cobra and will try to get some pix taken this afternoon and posted here. Whenever we make significant changes to the original plans it sure does take a lot of cutting and fitting to make it work, eh? The weather has kept me from having ANY thoughts of winter flying, so I have no excuses other than the usual busy-ness (sp?) of the holiday season. Christmas time is great but sure takes up a lot of time. We had some VERY cold weather last week with nightime temps around zero or below and daytime temps in the 20's. Then the snow storm came and dumped 51" in two days just up the road from me in a ski resort named Brighton. Well, we needed the moisture is what we keep telling ourselves.

Alright, enough dribble from me. Hang in there and keep up the good work.

The Cobra build is coming along very slowly, but thought I would post a few pictures of it to this point. I have both wings nearly finished....mounted and aligned....landing gear in place....cowling taped on....ventral and dorsal decks sheeted...

Sooo, still needs a ton of work, but...

Hang in there double gull-wing lovers!

I've got the sheeting done. I started over on the fuselage. It was to short so made one six inches longerand she looks alot better the wings are mounted and just a little cenerting on the bottom I could not belive it when I bolted up the bottom and had zero degrees incidence. still need to build a set of tail feathers but ran out of two things kerosene and sticks. I work in a 50 degree room but I cant in a 20 and no balsa the right size to work with. My bird looks like a piece of junk next to yours but for grabing parts and building whats in my head not on paper I'm happy with the out come. things to do 1 tail feathers built. 2 finish fuselage I'm going to shape foam than sheet over. 3 cut ailerons 4 install controls (hopefuly a new 2.4 10 model memory) 5 cover 6 fly and post video no matter how embarrasing. will post pics soon had her on her wheels it's one you will love or hate it may crash and burn but its been better than watching tv.
