Brian Taylor P-51 Mustang

Hello, I have had mt eye on the BT Mustang for quite sometime and I realize it is very scale in outline, but it is too small. I was wondering if anyone has enlarged it to, say, around 80" WS. My concern is that does it still look as scale at that size relative to it's original 69" size.

Thanx, Mark

I'm sure it has been done Mark but I'm not aware of any build threads. No reason the airplane would not look just as good at 80 inches as it does at 69 inches though. Dave Platt has an 81 inch Mustang that's not far behind the Taylor for scale fidelity as well.

I am using the Brian Taylor wing & horizontal stab on my copy of a Byron (still in progress - life events have slowed me down) http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10441461/tm.htm
When selecting a size to blow it up to, look for what is available such as Spinners, Cowels, Belly Scoop, Retracts, sliding canopy, etc and look at how they are made.
Also currently working on a Brian Taylor Bf109E (old design) scaled up to 81" from 61"

Thanx for the response guys. The Me 109 looks good. You bring up a good point about what accessories to consider when enlarging plans. Below is a picture of the BT P-51D enlarged to 74" WS. It is the only example I have been able to find. To me it looks as though it has lost some of its sleek look around the nose area forward of the wing LE.

The cowl on the Taylor airplane, which includes almost the entire nose forward of the leading edge, is a fiberglass molding which, obviously, would not be useable on an enlarged version. Chances are the builder of the model in your pictures was simply not as careful to get the correct contours when he consructed the cowl for that airplane as Taylor was on his prototype. Having studied Taylor's plans, along with most others, while designing my own 1/4 scale Mustang I would offer my opinion that it would be hard to do much better than Taylor did. My .02 cents of course.

PS - The canopy on that 74 inch version also appears a tad large and not particuarly accurate in shape in my opinion which throws off the entire fuselage.
