Golden Era 60 Bipe

1 Attachment(s)
Completed last month this biplane version of the Golden Era 60 Biplane from Model Aviation. Biggest change was moving the servos to the tail to offset the weight of the Saito 120, also moved the firewall back about 3/8". Still needed to add some nose weight however. Landing gear is a modified Goldberg Sukoi unit, wheel pants from a Skybolt. Pretty straight forward build, very stable, no bad habits noted. Nice aerobat. Need a few more flight to really get to know her. Trying to find a pilot that looks good in that big open cockpit!

Looks like a speed demon with the 120

It's pretty fast for a biplane, fly on half throttle most of the time. Almost unlimited vertical climb. Great sound. Designer Fred Randall used carbon fibre rods for wing spars, I used the standard 1/4" hardwood with spar webbing, works fine. Solatex covering. That wide landing gear makes it very stable while taxing. It's a keeper!

Nice job on your bipe. I have all the parts and plan to start building it soon. But I don't like the idea of the spar system it uses. I plan to use wood spars.

Hey glow start,

What prop are you running on your saito 1.20? Do you know about how much your golden era weighs? I just finished mine which only has the bottom wing and I put a saito 1.25 on it. I had to add quite a bit of nose weight on top of that just to get it to balance. I was kind of surprised to find out that my golden era is not all that fast with a 1.25 on it. In fact it flies at a rather moderate speed considering how much it is "technically" overpowered. I have been keeping my stick at around 3/4 throttle for a cruise speed and full throttle for vertical. It isint underpowered by any means but it just doesnt seem like it is as fast as the way yours sounds.

There's just too much drag. Typical of a biplane

I run a 16 X 6 on my Saito 125's

I built mine as a mono plane though. I built mine like the original plans that had just one wing on the bottom. That is the prop I am using as well. A 16x6 master airscrew.

As a monoplane, it should't have much drag. You might try a 15 X 8 prop?
